I have had identical symptoms on another car and after waiting four years for it to actually become a real pita problem, it turned out to be the crank sensor. V8 90...WIP

I've been having a similar problem with cutting out and stalling, with no codes or warnings, it turned out to be the common problem of the fuel tank breather hose disintegrating. Bits of hose had gone back into the tank and blocked the flexible fuel pickup hose in the fuel gauge sender/swirl pot assembly inside the tank.

I removed the fuel tank... which can be slightly awkward, and gave everything a good clean.

Amongst the other things that can cause this problem: I've just had a crankshaft position sensor fail on another vehicle. There was an occasional cutting-out and stalling of the engine once or twice a week, but it would quickly re-start, then it just totally failed and left me completely stranded just when I really need to go somewhere.

Not exactly the same, as I experienced this whilst driving mostly, but some of the connectors for relays etc under the seat were slightly loose. I'd find that mainly round corners it would cut out then immediately restart as the connection wobbled around.

All it needed was those spade connectors pinched up a little. Might be worth a quick look.

Strangely it hasn't reoccurred to mine for a month now, but I will still check the connections when I get the chance.

aarggh

Mine did it on the way home twice....


Literally everything stops... Engine off, radio off, dials zero then a second or so later it all comes back (without turning key)

Thing is it leaves NO code and the garage with their code machine reads nothing...

Searching interweb is all sorts (including transit forums)

Pressure release value
Maff Sensor
SCU (suction control Valve)
Temp sensor on ECU
Loom issues?
Pressure sensor on pump



So no idea where to start, it did it once in 1700 miles now over 50 miles its done it 3 or 4 times...



With no codes to go on nothing obvious to replace?


What do people think?

Battery earth connection: Make sure it's on tight and not loose. YES Checked and tight.

Main Relay: Is it still good? I've pushed everything in and 'wiggled stuff around where is the main relay? how do I know it's good or bad?

VCV: Simple change out and it will improve engine running. Not done done as Garage did not suspect this but then No code show anything is wrong? I need a code learn if this is changed? any links to the part I need

All earth connections of the truck: self explanatory. Yes checked and garage found a loose one hence we thought problem solved Smile

Hello

Which is the main relay? I've relays under steering wheel (some seems to get quite hot) and many more under seat.

Speaking to a house electrician he seems to think more likely a main relay than a part, as a part would not shut down everything.

I've tried wiggling wires and plugging relays back in. Just off for probably a 50 miles drive so see if it happened?

I wasn't paying too much attention when the chap was checking mine, but under the seat he would unplug the relays one by on and use a tool to poke into the connectors. It was quite simply a male spade connector on a stick and much like the process of checking valve shim clearances he would just get a feel for the female side of the relay connector.

In my case (it was actually a friends defender I was borrowing at the time) he did find more than one connector which was slightly more sloppy than it should have been. He pinched the female side of the connector up a tad and it resolved all issues with the random cutting out immediately. Been running for over a year with not a single repetition of the fault.

My mate was well chuffed. A garage had been looking for the issue multiple times.

then a second or so later it all comes back, sometimes I have to stop and restart, other times the engine just springs back to life.


It's done this while sat on drive stationary and also driving round?


Any thoughts? no codes...

New Main relay


Then I've pretty much wiggled every wire I can find under seats / dash / engine while car running to reproduce fault.


Took dash clock out and wiggled the wires near the back of ignition barrel (have a new switch on order)


Mechanic does not think it's a part as it would throw a code out and not shut down the engine . clocks, etc

So if I'm getting this right, you've not managed to recreate the fault at any point by wiggling and poking?
