Tyre Size Opinions
Hi all

Now that i have some boost alloys i will need some new boots at some point soon and wanted to gauge opinions on best size to get. I bought my Td5 as a toy to do up and restore as a fun project because its in good share from the start and most things are cosmetic and want to keep it looking fairly un molested. Anyway the plan is to do some off roading and i do less that 5k road miles a a year i it . So the up shot is i have my mind made up on some cooper STT Pro's ( purlely because i like the look of them) but not sure whether 265 75 r16 or 235 85 r16 are the way forward. Opinions welcome as i dont dislike the factory loo with the narrower Tyre but also a wider tyre might look good too Sad.

I'm not sure you'll get a definitive answer, just lots of opinions either way. I personally went for 265's as ours is mainly used on the road I thought a little extra rubber on the tarmac would help. It has however reduced the turning circle slightly.

I think narrower 235 would possibly be better in the mud to cut through the surface. Thumbs Up James

thanks im only really looking for opinions as its a lot of cash to get it wrong. i was originally thinking 265 for on road handling but now im not sure lol

Hello, Contrary ,it seems , to most others, I prefer the 235's. More than adequate for the normal on/off road use but without the extra road noise of the 265's.
Bet that has opened a can of worms ? Laughing

I've ran both 265 and 235's and would go back to 235's. Much less road noise in my opinion!! Thumbs Up

235 's will use less fuel, have better steering feel and are better in most UK off-road conditions.

I've run ATs, MTs, 235s, 255s 265s 285s 305s and 7.50s over the last 30+ years across deserts, in the arctic and boggy mountain sides.

Other than the physical 'will they fit' arguments, for uk driving unless you're off roading in thick mud every day, where I'd run 7.50 or 2.35 MTs, I'd say:

MT's are noticeably noisier than AT's.

None of the widths / profiles mentioned have greatly affected the handling or fuel consumption drastically one way or the other, they're still bolted to an ancient, top heavy, relatively slow truck that doesn't like going around corners too fast and drinks loads of fuel.

MT's can be scary in ice, winter rated AT's are MUCH better....

Whatever the width, let them down in sand and you'll be fine.

I've regularly had 70k+ miles out of a good set of tyres (MT and AT) so it can be worth spending a bet extra up front to get what you want

My mates drove down to Cape Town 20 years ago in a London cab on road tyres......
