Brickie question
Hi Folks,

While not exactly Defender related these piers are going to hold up the gates to protect my Landrover Very Happy

I'm going to build two piers 2.2mtrs tall, is their a limit to the height you can go with bricks per day to avoid squeezing out the mortar,

Thanks,

Shane

One story of a building in one day is quite normal.

Your piers will be fine in one day. 2007 90 Puma - Love it - Best car I have ever owned.

If they're there for protection consider making them hollow and filling with rebar and concrete (depending on how thick they are).

The mortar dries and firms up pretty quickly once you get going, though obviously takes a day or so to reach full strength.

Laying the bricks you're not going to be squeezing the mortar out, but give it atleast a day before before you start trying to hang the gates or drill holes in it.

Good point, or sink and RSJ into the ground and brick around it.

Hello shanecl

Worth checking the planning requirements (local to you).

Some years now (when we did this) but Fencing / Gates (of any material) in the UK
is limited to 1M directly adjacent to the Road 2M elsewhere...

To go above this requires Planning Permission (I think)

Good Luck... SKIP

Thanks for the reply guys, so I could get a good run on a Saturday

I'm standing an IP160 beam inside the piers and hang the gates off them, the brick will just be a clad.

The yard is at the back of the house and well off the road

It depends to a certain extent on how good and consistent you are at mixing mortar Thumbs Up

I'd be very impressed if a novice bricklayer managed to build a pillar over 2 metres high in a day. Gauge your mixes so you get consistent colour with your cement. I'd Leave them for a couple of weeks minimum before attempting to fix anything to them. Thumbs Up 2006 TD5110 station wagon

^^^ what Bows says, leave for a week before any hanging/drilling unless direct to beam, piers are tricky to build, make sure you use plenty of plasticiser for a smooth and wet mix, good luck!..
