I spoke to Devon 4x4 - my local garage - they asked if the fuel pump could be heard at start up
It could not - the relay clicks but no pump noise

So I think my fuel pump has died
Enough fuel gets through at low revs - must be by suction
But over 2000 revs engine is starved of fuel - would too much air to fuel cause white smoke ?

White smoke could be fuel pump. Should definitely be able to hear the fuel pump. They're probably correct Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

In our Disco2 TD5 the in tank fuel pump died twice - first it was "no sound"- engine was able to run, but on in low RPM and low power, when I tried to run up-hill it nearly died. Second it was only partial pump failure - engine has reduced power, so the car was capable of only 140KMH instead of 160KMH - for me this was nearly invisible problem. In that time I have to replace O-rings in fuel cooler, and I was not able to purge the fuel system. When I have disconnected the fuel line from engine and moved it to a plastic bottle fuel was just flowing out, not squirting. With good pump it should be something like 3 litres of fuel in a minute. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂnek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

As MadTom says, the Td5 runs a fairly high pressure 2 stage pump. One line at 1 Bar and one at 4 Bar. Removing a line should cause quite a mess! My next door neighbour has had a couple of pump failures and both times the pump is silent but it still runs with reduced power Thumbs Up

Next question is how are you going to change it? Drop the tank or cut the floor?

The floor is the easiest option by far Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Td5 runs a fairly high pressure 2 stage pump. One line at 1 Bar to the fuel filter and back to the pump stage 2 ( at 7 Bar.)

fuel Pressure regulate set the fuel to the head at 4 bar proxy

These were my exact symptoms

"Next question is how are you going to change it? Drop the tank or cut the floor?"
Cutting the floor will be easier but messy - I am surprised no one has made a cover / hatch to repair a cut floor
