Gearbox (MT82) filler plug...
Can anyone shed some light on the size of Torx bit I need to undo the filler plug and drain plug on the MT82 gearbox of my Puma tractor?
Just got it back from the service chappies, and want to change the loobygoo... It's still ever so slightly snatchy changing into 2nd... But a million times better than before it went in for a new clutch and associated bits n bobs!

Cheers,
Paul. ... ,-------,

Drain plug

Filler plug

DO NOT USE the filler plug for the oil level.....

You MUST fill in the right quantity (otherwise the pressure can give you oil leaks from the oil seals)

Solved the mystery!!

Took a trip to Halfords to get the required Torx bit.. I managed to get the "assistants" to let me take the T50 and T55 bits out of the store to check the size before I paid.. Turns out that both the filler and drain plugs need a 12mm allen key and not Torx bits, so had to ask again if I could take more stock outside without paying!! I tried a 12mm 1/2 inch drive Allen key, fitted perfectly, now here's the rub, you cant get a bloody ratchet in the space to undo the filler plug. Buggritt!!! Big Cry

Then I saw a set of drain plug keys hanging on the stand, took them outside, and checked that they would fit.. The 12mm key fits perfectly, and along with a 19mm ratchet ring spanner, the plug is easily removed and replaced. Very Happy Cost £19.99 for the set, but will come in useful for other jobs.. Thumbs Up ... ,-------,

Not sure if it is a pressure matter but rather a lubrication design issue. The MT82 fitted on Mustangs uses 2.6l. Puma 110" SW

Hello I have a 2015 Defender with the 6 speed gear box MT82. The vehicle has done circa 13k miles and I want to change the gear box oil. Found the outlet plug but struggling to establish which is the fill plug. I have researched via the internet/ Yuo Tube, etc and i am more confused than ever! Local dealership was no help which is sadly very disappointing and just gave me a set of isometric workshop manual drawings which was of little help due to poor quality of copy.
Can someone advise me please.
Attached photo of an 8mm hexagonal plug on driver side that I think might be the filler appeture, but I am unsure?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Regards,
Jonathan

It does, it's probably more to do with certain seals in the box not being designed for constant submersion in oil. Some gearboxes also generate their own pressure internally rather than being simply splash fed.

Either way the MT82 in the Defender is designed and tested to take 2.2 litres for a service change it's not designed as a spill fill box, so putting any more in will simply be a waste of oil at the very least.

Many thanks for all the additional information regarding the MT82 box all very useful and confidence boosting.
Once again thanks to everyone who has taken the trouble to reply to my initial post - very much appreciated!
