England 2003 Defender 90 Td5 HT Rutland Red
Loss of power and then White smoke
Drove 5 miles this morning - all normal
Drove back and my 90 would not rev above 2000
No power to pull up the last hill - had to resort to low range and just got home

Felt live out was hitting a rev limiter at 2000
Cleaned the air filter - dusty but not too bad
It will now rev to 3000 but with more accelerator I get no more revs but clouds of White smoke
No smoke below the 3000

Any ideas ?

At least it should be an easy fix. Ray

So will it need a new ECU, and a new loom ?

Hopefully not. Get some electrical contact cleaner and thoroughly clean the ecu terminals and red plug. Replace the loom with an oem or genuine one for about £40 then clean the plug out again weekly for the next two or three weeks and everything should be back to normal. Ray

I have cleaned the plug and replaced the injector harness
No difference - it will only rev to 2000 then lots of white smoke but no power

Should this be an instant fix ?

I can't comment if oil in the loom is the cause of your problem, however if you are going down this route then I would also consider opening up the ECU itself and seeing if there is any oil inside, to be done carefully in a clean and dry environment, and if so, rinse it out with some electronic pcb cleaner.

Try unplugging the maf and having a drive and see if there is a difference. Ray

Does this not sound more like a intercooler hose problem?

Boost hose/IC problem should result in black smoke - not enough air to fuel ratio

White smoke could mean your turbo is on way out. Pull the turbo induction hose off and wiggle the turbine around shouldnt have much play, up and down is ok but in and out means its failing.

Also check the lower turbo hose for excess oil, a little is ok a lot is bad.

The oil is not a real problem, real problem are tiny connector on the injectors itself. And this is why LR recommends replacement of the injectors loom.
Try to look for some diagnostic (like nanocom) and log some data from test drive with the problem. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile
