Chassis rust help/advice . Is this chassis too far gone?
Hello all,
I am thinking of buying a LHD defender project for when I move abroad to France, my friend has a 19J 1987 defender 110, which he will sell me. It has suffered from bad weather and the chassis has quite some rust. It looks to me like the cross members have all rusted.
My question is is the chassis too rusted for repair? (See the below photos).
Also , does anyone have any photos of chassis which they have had to discard of due to too much rust? Is there anything else I should watch out for in terms of rust?
Any help/advice appreciated. Jack

The pictures are in Jacks' gallery although they're not brilliant, to be honest. Ultimately, anything can be repaired if you have enough time and the proper facilities. However, I think that a good rule of thumb is to always assume that there will be more rust than you can see and to plan accordingly. Darren

Ok found them, and yes you need to use the flash to make them clearer.

It doesn't look too bad, i think those seriously holed out riggers are available seperately as a weld on repair part. There is the usual rot on the front foot wells too. Some of the out riggers will probably come up well with a flap wheel on the grinder.

I don't think it's beyond repair from what i can see in the photos, i've see much worse repaired, it doesn't look like it's been patched up in the past. you could patch up some of that quite neatly, but personally i prefer replacement parts over patching.

As above though, you often find more when you start cleaning things up and chopping bits out.

a bit of sanding and fibre glass and your good to go Razz

Nah i recon its still worth sorting out with a bit of time and a welder. As others have said though expect more holes and small holes to be bigger! All depends if you think its worth sorting out or going galv chassis. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

I would get a pointy hammer out and tap it everywhere before making a decision. What may look ok from the outside may be shot from the inside, it is 30 years old after all, assuming its original 2015 RRS Autobiography SDV6
