Gearbox, Transfer wading plug / breather
Hi forum,

i am sure this has possibly been done to death - but with some conflicting information i wanted to confirm

Wading plugs are installed for wading an removed immediately after (or close to) is the purpose of the hole to allow breathing, oil release etc????

is it possible to fit a breather in place of the wading plug ?

Essentially, yes to both. I've seen wading plugs replaced with clear pipe breathers that allows any oil build up to be seen.

It's a double-edged sword though - if you are a serious off-roader then a breather from the bottom of the bell housing can be rather vulnerable.

Personally, I'd just fit and remove as necessary. It doesn't need to be every five minutes, though. You could, for example, fit at the beginning of a two week trip and remove afterwards. Darren
