I'm with you defender9, as I also prefer the earlier galvanised parts as they do not rot as fast as the later items.

I also prefer the earlier sliding window One Tens, which were only built from March '83 to June '84.

Here's one of my projects, still on the "to-do" list.

The observant may notice something unusual about it.... Question

I also like the galv capping and bumpers on any Defender.

Intrigued to find out what is unusual...? Neutral James

Blimey, that's an early one. No side repeaters on the wings? Darren

Hang on a minute, it's got free wheeling hubs! It's a very early, and rare, selectable four wheel drive model. Darren

I had my furry-hooded parka fully zipped up for that one Laughing

Got any more details of the vehicle? Darren

I wouldn't have guessed in a million years! I have still got a lot to learn about our defenders and their specs etc.
I have always thought some one had made a start on restoring, when I have seen older defenders with galv parts on. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Well I don't want to divert too much from the OP's vehicle, which is nice in its own right, but people might find the early ones interesting, and as you ask:

I rescued it from an early grave not only for the selectable 2/4WD, which was an option almost nobody took up - so they stopped offering it fairly quickly - but also because it is an unusual colour.

You probably know that all slidey-window One Tens had Limestone uppers (above the waistline) whatever colour the rest of the body had.

Almost no-one chose all-Limestone which was a boring old Series colour, they chose the "new One Ten" colours like Trident Green, Roan Brown etc.

So finding one in this colour is unusual.

Also, almost everybody chose County Station Wagons and turned their back on the non-County SW's which were mainly bought by commercial concerns and therefore seldom cherished - or polished on a Sunday morning!

I've been interested in these vehicles for years, and the Countys now seem to outnumber the non-Countys by 20 to 1, or more.

This one is a non-County survivor, hence no side-stripes, no indicator repeaters, has Series style vynil seats and very basic spec, but it still has its original 2.3 petrol engine, number 86A, so has escaped being re-engined.

In my view, these early One Tens are the true founders of the enduring success of the Defender - rather than HUE 166!

Mine needs a lot of work, so I expect the OP will have his back on the road long before this one is.

Again, not wishing to hijack this thread but hopefully a relevant question; when did LR start painting the body cappings? My October 1986 registered V8 90 has had a re spray including the cappings. I wonder also if the first lot of cappings which were painted were also galvanised underneath?

It was some time during 1986, part way through the C registration year. Black bumpers appeared at the same time and the doors lost their fake galv. cappings. Darren

Actually, thinking about it, the OP's 110 probably had painted cappings from new and the bumper may have been black also. The cut away grill indicates that it's had a winch fitted at some point, so has a had a couple of different bumper changes. Darren

Losing an axle the easy way
Strip down beginning...
Hopefully a pic of the rear axle dropping down nicely, attached somewhere!

The grill is just broken - it doesn't look like it's ever had a winch and the previous owner of 24years never had one.
All ready for cutting end of chassis off and welding new 1/2 chassis on, leaving body on to jig it correctly, then I'll tackle replacing bulkhead, b posts and s/w cross member and splitting the body so the cappings can be blasted and galvanised at the same time as everything else.

I think there is someone on eBay making and selling half chassis of the earlier type with the rear body lugs welded on rather than the Td5 type.

Looking forward to seeing your progress on the rebuild.

That's what I bought, although unused from a failed project, it came with the td5 lugs in so I took them off and welded proper early defender (like Series) flat ones on.
The actual half chassis is nice quality, but the plan is to get the chassis to last a few more years before a complete galv chassis and in the interim rolling restore the doors, bulkhead and body panels, that's the plan anyway! Like everyone, I hope a failed project complete unused galv chassis turns up!
