New Zealand 2013 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 CSW Indus Silver
Defender Mechanic in Auckland
Hi there, any advice on who could look at my 2013 110? I'm new to the breed and would like to take it to someone to give it a once over to assess the vehicle. Have a couple of small issues after purchasing. A few small electrical probs, mainly lighting. And a problem with a wheel vibration. Have had front wheel balanced twice now and the truck still shakes like a washing machine over 90kmh....wondering if it might be something more sinister...first balance the some of the weights fell off...hoping its the same case again.

Stag 4x4 are extremely good. Have looked after all my Land Rovers ('49 S1; V8, Td5 and Tdci Defenders; Freelander, Disco and RR Classic) for 20+ years. Great guys who really know their stuff. Never had a single problem. Thoroughly recommended.

You cannot go wrong with either Bramble Downs, Waitakere Rd or Forward Specialists (1968) , Railside Ave , Henderson.
Both do a good job.

Good experiences with Eli at Forward Specialties, Top Of Range north shore and Stag4x4 Thumbs Up

Internal lighting? I went through that with my 2008 2.4 ... Might be able to help you? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

Thanks for the contacts. I will look into them as soon as I get back from overseas. The lighting issues pertain to the door switches I'm assuming. None of the doors operate the internal light when opened. Also there is no night lighting for the heater controls. But this could be normal for the defender I'm not sure...the sales guy tells me it is.

I was at Smales farm last weekend and go a great shot of my beast and what i assume is a Series 3. I'll try to upload.

Yeah, could be door switches. Easy to test, mine had an issue with the rear courtesy light housing having a faulty ground too, took an age to find that! Meant that internal lights only operated via the local 'ON' and not via the 10AS unit. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

I'm sure i'll spend a quite a few hours getting to know my Defender, but that's what car ownership used to be like when I was a young fella. Those photos I tried to upload went to my album. There is one in there that you can see a small dent on the right front fender...are these more of a problem to repair or "pop out" being aluminium? Was wondering if one of those mobile dent guys might be worth a call. First thing is try to fix the steering wobble. I was reading about the "death wobble" on another post and wonder if that could be my problem. Will find out when I get back to nz.

That might sort out the photo??

Thanks for your tips chaps. I ended up getting a service at Top of the Range with Brett and Bryan. I live on the Shore so Albany made sense. Have been to the wheel balancers for the 3rd time and each time they have found the front wheels to be unbalanced...this last time was a surprise as no weights had fallen off, therefore perhaps an operator error. So now I have all wheel nuts and it is theoretically balanced and it seems to be ok...the smallest of a shimmy at motorway speeds that I think I can live with.

The ball joints, tie rods and steering all checked out ok, and TOR say it is a pretty straight truck. So I am relieved to hear that as it was bought sight unseen. However from previous experience providing you have your vehicle checked within a "reasonable" time frame you will be protected if something major was untoward. Not easy buying in distant locations.

So now I am starting down the upgrade road. Purely to the benefit of the next owner of course. My immediate add ons will be tinted windows, dyna mat, roof rack, reversing camera, and OBD tool...any other suggestions welcome. Have sold my late model Pajero which I have to say was a great beast...just no soul

If you're getting an obd reader then I suggest going a step further with a BAS remote remap (RR2 tool that does the most interesting engine management functions comes in the package) Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...
