Galvanising a bulkhead
I have removed my bulkhead and am wanting to get it galvanised, I am based south of Birmingham near Evesham, Do I need to get this stripped of paint and caulk before I send it to the galvanizers or will they do that for me. Or does any one no of a company in this area that will dip this and chemically remove the paint caulk and small areas of rust prior to taking it for galvanising. Any recommended companies for either process and any words of advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

David

You will need to get it bead blasted before sending it to remove every last trace of paint & sealant. You also need to drill a few holes in various box sections to ensure they don't explode and that the galv can get in/out. Also prudent/necessary to bolt some strong box section across the 2 lower mounting points to avoid any risk of distortion.

Best talk to your galv place as they may offer an in-house preparation service at additional cost

I've got one to do soon as well.

I would cut out the vent mesh panels and then put them back in post-dipping, otherwise they'll just fill with zinc. The other area that causes issues is the vent hinge holes, I have heard that silicone sealant inhibits the adhesion of the zinc so my plan is to fill those with that and see what happens. Otherwise it's some fiddly drilling to remove it afterwards.

Also all the rivnuts will need either removing prior to dipping or drilling and tapping afterwards. And all the various holes for things like plastic inserts etc. will likely need some attention too.

They have quoted £240, it would be back to bare metal with no rust, buys a lot of wire brushes and nitromors.

Depends if you want the easy way or hard way? Laughing

Sure it buys you a lot of wire brushes, but will you get them inside into all the important places??

I've galvanised a few chassis and bulkheads now, if they aren't prepped right then you may as well not bother.
£240 is cheap to have it done properly.... Whistle 80" 80" 86" 88" 90"

As I intend to keep it for the foreseeable future this looks like the right way to go.
Many thanks for all the help and advice that has been offered. Time to strip it down.

Regards

David

Galvanisers
Can anyone recommend any of the Galvanisers in the midlands area, looks like I have a choice of Joseph Ash at Halesowen, Arkinstalls in Tiverdale or Wedge in Willenhall I dont mind travelling to get a good job with someone who has experience of galvanising a Defender Bulkhead
