Removing 109 6cylinder head
I have a 6 cylinder head to remove with a friend, having not done one before, is there a short guide on the steps to remove one? 1999 Defender TD5 110

After removing 20 odd bolts, we think we have them all. The head is still firmly attached (not run for many years and engine appears seized)
Any tips on removing a stubborn head?
Also, any ideas on the size of the nut for the bottom pulley? 1999 Defender TD5 110

It's a long while since I took the head off one of these! The 1.6 and 2.0 four cylinder, and 2.6 six cylinder IOE engines are essentially the same.

As I recall all the head bolts and studs are obvious, so once the inlet manifold and rocker shaft is off and the head bolts removed the head should be free. There is an external oil pipe at the rear of the head which sometimes gets overlooked. If the head is stuck you could try giving it a good biff with a hardwood block on a solid area.

I'm afraid I can't offhand remember the size of the bottom pulley retaining bolt, but it will probably be a Whitworth/BSF sized socket. I know that I have a 3/4" drive socket that fits, if you could measure the AF dimension with reasonable accuracy I can translate it to the approprate tool size for you.

It's a cracking engine when in good condition, by the way, exceptionally smooth and by the standards of the time quite powerful. Also quite scarce now.

Goodness, it shows how long since I messed with one of these, I had fogotten that the rocker shaft runs directly in the head.

You've removed the nuts on the two studs that hold the cover on, I presume?

I have the 2.6 WSM at home, I'll have a look for further clues this evening.

Ahhh right. We thought those are just studs for the rocker cover.

You're right and I am wrong, they don't hold the head down.

It seems as though you're head may simply be stuck, in which case the usual techniques of biffing with a wooden block, lifting with an engine crane under the thermostat housing, or lift and biffing in combination, may be the recourse.

Looking at the WSM. I think we have missed out possibly 2 bolts, the ones circled in yellow which look to go into the block as well, which if we have, wont help much! 1999 Defender TD5 110
