United Kingdom 1999 Defender 90 Td5 Heritage LE Bronze Green
South Africa and Namibia
Haven't been on here for a while but I still own and drive the Defender most days, just recently returned from a trip to South Africa and Namibia hiring a Defender fully equipped for a 3 week trip. Flew direct to Cape Town to collect

We then drove north to the Cederburg area then on to Sendelingdrif for the border crossing to Namibia, unfortunatly the boat had been taken away after a 80km terrible dirt track drive to the campsite.

So the following morning there was a 80km return trip to Alexander Bay to try to cross to Oranjemund normally only allowed with a permit from the diamond mining company. Fortunately we were allowed to cross and drove on to Luderitz on the Atlantic Coast. A very strange place built on rocky land the approach looks like something from Mars

We then had an organised trip into the Namib desert as permits are required, the 110 was amazing rescuing both Landcruisers on many occasions.

3 days in the Dunes with Namib Offroad Excursions, highly recommend but very hot!
From here we drove on to Fish River Canyon (2nd largest Canyon in the World) , Ais Ais back to South Africa to do Die Hell in the Swartburg Mountains

Unfortunately 3 weeks is not enough so we will have to return for further adventure, everyone was friendly most campsite were clean and tidy.

Sounds an awesome trip, on my wish list. Glad they're still hiring out Defenders, I thought they'd all gone Toyota. James

Tried to pull this out but unfortunately I wasn't supplied with a snatch block so the winch stalled, eventually I managed to winch the rear round

The Focus was driven by a couple from Israel they had been stuck for 45 mins in 40c. They didn’t have a clue, didn't know where the towing eye was or what one was!

Rob, nice trip, and especially good to see all is going well with you.
I hope you did not wreck the local car wash when trying to get all the desert sand off. Whistle
Say hello to H. from us.
Eric

P.S. in a few weeks time we'll be over at a S's to visit Dunsfold. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
