Thought I'd update the thread with the findings.

In the end it came down to a disintegrating pilot bearing in the flywheel. Took the opportunity to renew the clutch assembly, slave cylinder/release bearing, slave cylinder adapter and valve.

Sometime ago the gearbox was dropped to get to an oil leak. Suspect that on reassembly the clutch assembly may not have been aligned correctly and was the ultimate cause of the bearing failure. Any comments?

After everything was put back I found that the gear shift lever would not freely move to the neutral position when coming out of second to go into third. Also more vibration than normal is being felt in the gear lever. It freed up after a while and with the engine running the lever would center. However, with the engine off the lever will not center on its own. Any ideas what may be causing this?

Could just be the 'whatzit' that holds down the lever ball joint itself. Take off the boot and have a look, 4 bolts.. you should figure it out Thumbs Up

(Why oh why does it have 4 bolts instead of 3 that's another question...) Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...
