Ignition key problems
My 2007 TdCi sometimes ( with both keys I have) will not allow me to turn the ignition key to disable the vehicle manufacturers steering column lock.
Sometimes it can take 2 or 3 minutes & it looks like I am stealing the vehicle Embarassed whilst I am cursing the lock.

Now , I am prepared to change the lock but what is best so that I am not having to have a separate key for the door /ignition plus my locking fuel cap/steering wheel lock & pedal lock....
Is it worth changing to the X- Engineering lock whilst I am in there OR does this do something different?
TIA

The X engineering lock is a solid metal cover that goes over the standard lock.
Worth fitting though Thumbs Up

Also have you tried taking the pressure off the lock by moving the steering wheel? My girlfriend couldn't get the steering lock off mine once and it was because she hadn't removed the pressure by turning the wheel Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

Graffty99 - I have tried all of that.
Williamthedog- didn't realise that about the X eng block
Ericvv - I will try that but I think it isn't the lock sticking. I think it is wear & tear more than anything

I have to remove the steering lock, dismantle, clean, place the small parts back in right order and place it back into the car.
The lock was full of mixture of old oil with dust, and it was blocking easy movement of internal parts.
Don't wait to long, or it will be worse, and you will not be able to start car.
I did it 3 times in different Defenders and twice in Discovery 2. All have no problems now. Hardest one was a Defender parked between trees in wood with lot of snow around. We were not able to pull the car out of the wood, because of close trees and locked steering, so I had to remove the lock there. The owner spent there half a day in very cold conditions, being not very lucky. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

I had the exact same & the graphite powder worked a treat Thumbs Up
I did the power every second week for about 6-8 weeks and now bi-monthly and the jamming of the steering lock is now a distant memory... Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Did it again yesterday despite over the last 3 or 4 weeks me squirting graphite into the lock.
I think I need to disassemble the lock & throughly clean it.
To be fair I would prefer to replace it with new but keep the existing key so I don't have to change door locks.
Anyone know of a way to do this?

You can order new lock sets from LR I believe if you have the metal tag that came with the keys & has the key number stamped on it.

I know it sounds a little daft but over the years on several Land Rovers I've come across this problem and one answer that has gone a long way to curing it is to get a new key cut. My last 110 came with two sets of keys, one that was used on a daily basis and the other set that was kept in the owners workshop for their mechanics to use when work was needed instead of trying to find the driver and faff about collecting keys which meant the workshop set were like new. I had similar issues to the OP and just tried the "spare" set with no problems at all. What happens is that the keys themselves wear and cause issues when trying them in the ignition barrel, a good key cutter should be able to be a little generous when cutting a new key from your worn one which in turn is a lot less expensive than changing all the barrels.

This started happening on mine about two months ago to the point where I had to play around with the ignition key in the barrel for a couple of minutes to get the key to turn to start.

Dealer replaced the entire barrel and door locks under warranty. All good now. My 10th Land Rover, but my first Defender.
