After an engine rebuild

Hi all, just had the 300tdi (110) back from a major overhaul (lock up on overheating, thanks to the many who advised through that little adventure) and all seems to be well, but garage has insisted on T&Cs on warranty being that I have oil and filter changed after 500 miles and tappets adjusted ditto. Just wondering why this is, and if there is any other advice about running the engine in, or driving differently, speeds, loads etc in the weeks ahead, any thoughts gratefully received, cheers, Jonathan

You forget about running in with modern engines.
Main points:
Keep revs low when engine cold. No sudden stress or acceleration ( I Know- its a defender)
Don't over rev when warm, keep to best gear without stress.
Don't drive short distances regularly.
As running in period progresses you can increase revs slightly, and a medium speed long run would work wonders.
Fastish motorway run towards end of running in period best.

All bits will be removed with filter change and oil change at 500 miles.
Thereafter steady driving for next 1000 miles will pay dividends in the long run.
Check with garage, but a 3000 miles oil/filter change might be advisable.

HI there, thanks, very useful, much obliged to you - what period should the running in cover, just the 500 miles?

Running in happens for a long time but it is generally considered that after the first 1000 miles then the engines full potential can be used.

Maximum economy and power is generally around the 30 - 50,000 mile mark. Although this is only a rule of thumb and differs between engines

I would say the garage is a good one for demanding a 500 mile oil change

Varying loads. A nice country road, not a motorway drive

Keep revs low, but full throttle can (and should) be used
