Fitting an alpine sub woofer (and amp)
Hi all,

Hopefully someone who's fitted one previously can provide some guidance!

I've finally gotten round to fitting the alpine space saving sub that I got for Christmas (which includes an amp). I've fitted the sub and amp etc on the cubby box, run the permanent live cable and earth, but I'm struggling to understand where I connect the "remote turn on lead" and the "speaker outputs".

I'm using a Xtrons single din head unit which has a brown cable (phono connection) which says subwoofer out, but I'm unsure whether it should be connected to the Alpine's remote turn on lead (blue cable). Xtrons are great radio's, but their documentation and installation manuals are sadly lacking...

Also, I've noted that the speakers have 4 cables, whilst the speaker outputs on the amp only has 1? So which cable do I splice into (on the speaker), to connect into amp?

I've got a 2009 2.4 if that makes any difference!

A picture of the back of the Xtrons head unit would be a great help.

The brown phono out would be the audio feed to the subwoofer.

The remote turn on facility will be a normal wire in the sub loom. On most head unit sub looms there are one or two wires which are bare ended and it should be one of these, again a picture would help. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

That sorts it right out.

The wire that says amp and ant on it is the remote switch out from the head unit to either turn on the amp and/or raise an electric radio antenna.

I have no idea what the remote on lead is for unless they do a remote panel or other accessory that can be plugged in and powered from it.

The brown RCA (phono) will be the audio feed from the head unit to the subs audio input (should also be an RCA).

Hope this helps. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for that - remote on and Amp connection makes sense.

The sub woofer / amp doesn't have an additional RCA connections (other than the speaker left / right), maybe these additional pictures would make more sense:

Think I've got it.

The amp for the sub is picking up all audio by interupting the speaker wiring and then using a variable crossover to put the mid and tweater frequencies back to the speakers whilst send the bass to the sub.

It does not need the brown RCA connection on the back of the Xtrons head unit. It does however possibly make your wiring in a lot more time consuming. 1995 300 Tdi Epsom Green - It's a keeper.

Ah, yes that would make perfect sense...

So, any idea which speaker cable I need to splice into? Razz

I can see that the speaker has 4 cables - i'd presume 2 are for the speaker, then another 2 being sent up to the tweeter?

12v remote is Amplifer turn on. This is always blue white tracer 12v and sole purpose to turn on and off an Amp.

Amp / Aerial is for powered aerials / amplified antenna. (This is not for tuning and audio Amp on and off.)

You shouldn't need to tap into existing speakers to take your RCA audio signals, unless no other option.
These are normally red and white, left and right.
These are pre outs from the rear of the HU to the RCA input on the Amp.

So one your Amp, you should have primary power, I.e. Earth, main power and 12v remote (blue white 12v tracer wire.)

Audio signals should be 2x RCA inputs, ideally shielded cable L and R.

You HU should have an ISO DIN electrical connection with or without adaptor IF needed.
Input for aerial. Or DAB if applicable and the blue / white tracerwire extended from the rear of the HU to the Amp.

SWI is Steering Wheel Interface, not required.

These are basic connections andany unused connections should always be kept insulated.

Thanks Steve.

The Head Unit does have RCA connections on (and the Alpine has got RCA connections), though I'd need a longer RCA cable (which I think I'll buy tomorrow - much easier than cutting into the speaker cables).

I've confirmed that the sub powers on, so i'm 80% there.

Thanks for your help both!
