Car transporters?
Hi, I need to move a Freelander 1 from Southampton to Scotland. Can anyone recommend a company that would do this?

Cheers, BCP

Not a company but a web site:-

www.shiply.com

Think of it as a reverse eBay for shipping.

You put what you want to move, how you want to move it (driven, trailered (open or closed), the to and from postcodes and when; people then bid on it and each company will try to undercut the other.

You can check the reviews on the people who are offering to transport and see their insurance ratings.

I sent my 90 to Bowler using Shiply and have sent my track car 'up North' a few times to a specialist - a really useful service and ends up being much more cost effective than using the companies I've relied upon in the past.

I could rent/loan you my flatbed transporter if you have a towing licence and happy to do it yourself?

I had a 90 delivered by shiply. Bideford Devon to Nottingham £230. Its not worth hiring a trailer and wasting your own time.

If you get stuck - I have the number of one of the guys I've used off Shiply; however, you're better to have a Shiply best price before you speak with him, so that you know what figure to aim for.

Most of the large car transporters use Shiply and the best deals are when they have a one way job and nothing to bring back - these are when you find they offer a keen price, so that they can cover their fuel costs on their homeward bond leg.

Shiply quotes seem to be about £400-£450 and reasonably consistent. Looks like I'll probably go with them unless anyone's driving an empty lorry back north in the next couple of weeks...

Maybe worth asking a local breakdown company either from your area going up or from the destination area coming down with a load and going back empty? 1999 Defender TD5 110

Recovery firms don't tend to go that far these days due to drivers hrs coming into the recovery industry
Most (if not all) "relay" with other firms to get the drivers back in the area,

Is it drivable? I.e. Mot & roadworthy?
If so a trade plate firm could be your most cost effective way

UK Motor Services is one I have used in the past
