Learner Driver Insurance
Does anybody have any advise regarding getting my Daughter insured in her own car as a Learner Driver.

I got her covered with Collingwood Learners last year, but she didn't pass her test, so the policy is now up for renewal. Collingwood wont insure the car this year, because I have fitted Dual Controls. Surely this makes it less of a risk, but they are saying NO.

Any suggestions of Insurance Companies that are able to see Common Sense!

Most will cover her if driving somebody else's car, but because her car is in her name, this also seems to be a problem to a lot of insurance companies.

Again if somebody understands this logic, perhaps they could explain it to me.

With my daughters I got the best deal with Admiral.
A few things you must be aware of, if you werent already;
1) try to get a price from the insurance company for when/if she passes her test. One of the cheapest prices we got jumped to £5000 per year with a full licence. The only way I could do this was on price comparison websites. You can do this by re-quoting and changing the details to a full licence.
2) make sure you add some mature drivers as that seems help
3) newer cars seem to be cheaper than old ones
4) dont bother with third party, its no cheaper
5) take the biggest excess you are comfortable with.

Surely fitting dual controls would render the vehicle 'modified' in the eyes of the insurers and therefore subject to specialised insurance?

This would appear to be the main issue - you say that this is the reason given but then allude to the fact that it's down to your daughter owning the car.

We have used Bell Insurance for both ours, cars in their names in each instance - Bell are part of Admiral and run a black box scheme where this tracks the driving habits for three months and then (potentially) provides a small discount on the basis of the driving style.

The alternative, whilst learning, is A-Plan but we found they were far more expensive one the test had been taken...

My lad has was with adrian flux when learning but when he passed his test just over a year ago went with Marmalade. Black box policy with real time online telemetric tracking, daily driving report, unlimited mileage and unlike other new driver polices there are no curfew times. Poor driving will result in incremental fines imposed soon after the event.

2010 Suzuki Swift 1.3 just over a £1000 last year, £800 second renewal with two named drivers. Steve.
Owned numerous Land Rover vehicles of all shapes and sizes over the decades.
Current Defender: A non tarts hand-bagged Puma 110 XS USW.

I know this isn't any help but its for future ref for anyone who's son or daughter is learning to drive and after their 1st car.
Sometimes the bigger Cars like the peugeot 306 /307/ 207, ford focus, golf etc well cars that size can be cheaper than the smaller cars likes of the 107 etc, to insure. I found this out when I was learning to drive, a M plate metro rio was more expensive to insure than a Peugeot 306 DTurbo which was also on an M plate!
But also beware of the age of car too, there is a certain point where the car can be too old for the said person due to the car hitting classic car status, meaning they will have to be 25.
So beware of that one, One lad on the metro owners club had to sell his little metro city due to this. A bit of a joke I know!

Sometimes insurances do like to make the money on the smaller engine cars, but since the engine tech is different now, it might have changed. So sometimes it might best to pick up an older Higher CC than something that's current or from 2010 onwards. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

Success is 90% Inspiration and 4 minutes Preparation # you can make it!
