ABS Sensors

I have a 1999 TD5 with ABS. Currently not working, and the nanocom reports it as a wheel Speed sensor issue (OSF) Looking around prices on wheel speed sensors seem to be anywhere from £11.99 (but apparently not compatible with a TD5 defender) to £280!!!

Does anyone know for sure if there are any differences? they all look the same, and I thought that the same wabco ABS unit was used for many ages of defender?

Before you fork out unplug the sensor give it a good clean, reset the fault and see if that cures it. The connection is often to blame for faulty ABS faults.

A 99' TD5 with ABS?. Mine is a 99' and no ABS, guess mine was an early one. 1999 Defender TD5 110

And mine is a 2003 without ABS... should have been a standard feature...

2004 Defender 90 Td5 X-Tech LE Zambezi Silver

I had this fault with mine recently (2004 XS,) when the O/S lower swivel bearing fell apart, after some investigation I found that the sensor is simply a push fit through the middle of the upper swivel, the extra movement of the hub due to the lower bearing failure appears to have pushed the sensor to be up a little so that it gave a reduced output signal, (it needs to be very close to the toothed ring on the outer edge of the CV joint cup to work properly.)

I carefully pushed it down until it wouldn't go any further and then levered it back up by maybe half a mm or so.

Worked for me

Edit to add; worn or misaligned wheel bearings can also cause the same fault.

The simplest way to determine if its the wiring or plug (after you tap it down to no effect) or if its actually the sensor itself is to switch it with the other side. If the fault persists on the opposite side, it is the sensor. BTW if it is an original sensor for your 99 (like mine) you got your money's worth out of that one.

In the past two years I have gone through this for both fronts, and both times it was the sensor, not the plug, not the wiring, not the CV, not the bearings, not just a tap it down (though I checked all those). Just saying... Good luck.

It's a 110 County SW, and according to the original sales receipt it was a paid upgrade!

Worth a try! Wheel bearings are in good nick fortunately.

I'm pretty certain it is original, I guess after 18 years and 190,000 miles I shouldn't grumble!! Although at ~£60 for a new sensor, I won't lose any sleep!

ABS & TC where both optional extras on the TD5 but standard on the XS models.

I had the same error on my 110, cleared it 2,000 miles later it hasnt returned. Though if it does need to be replaced I believe you can get a quality OEM one for around £80

You can check the resistance of the sensor (disconnected) it should be 1 to 2 K ohms. Also you can check if the sensor is generating a voltage by using the AC range of the multimeter by jacking it up and spinning the wheel.

Mine had the same fault.
Took it to local Indy & it came up as off side front sensor.
Had it replaced but fault still there afterwards.
It would be nice to rectify this problem.
Mine is a 2002 with abs/tc
