Does this transfer box fit a Td5?
Hi folks,

Can anyone advise whether this Discovery / Range Rover transfer box will fit my 2006 Td5 Defender;

ebay item number - eBay Item No. 292076582842

I was hoping to recondition this and fit a disc hand brake conversion before removing my existing transfer box.

Many thanks, Will.

It will but in every way it's worse. (you would also need to swap over stuff like the full handbrake assy from yours)

Is that dated 1976??. That is very early.(I didnt think there were launched till a bit later than that?) The later they get the better the cases are. They have more internal ribbing as they got newer and the cases post about 2003 have large external ribs on the top of the case.

It probably also doesn't have a cross drilled input gear.

It also appears to have just been thrown on a pile of junk....

These are the external ribs on the later ones yours should have (this is from a puma)

Some of the very early cases need a different rebuild kit. If its suffix A on the serial number I would absolutely avoid it.

In short I wouldn't use that case.

In my mind the later TD5 cases are about as good as they get for a Defender. They have the strongest case (as do the Pumas) but the Pumas are 1.2 and the gear-sets aren't as strong as the 1.4.

I assume you want the 1.2 gear-set but that case is not a good start point I am afraid. Try and find something from the late 90's out of D1.

Ask for the serial number and you can work out its age. 2001 90 HT 6.0LS/6spdAuto.

I have removed my bid on the basis of the info above - are we now saying that it is not a duffer or should I leave well alone?

Thanks, Will.

Looking at the state of it, I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. Cheap doesn't necessarily mean good value.

True enough, I will probably leave it and recondition my own if / when I need to do the clutch.

Yeah I wouldn't touch it still. 92 is still quite early and it doesn't look cared for,

Surely you can find someone breaking a late d1 which would be a far better place to start. 2001 90 HT 6.0LS/6spdAuto.
