TD5 turbo heat shield bottom bolt seized
Hello all, went to remove the turbo heat shield and have been thwarted by the bolt that you access through the hole in the back of the shield. It's seized solid and i think I've started to round the bolt head. Any tips anyone who may have struggled with this? Thanks Andy

Drill the rivets out. It's a nightmare of a bolt to remove. It holds well on the mounts on the engine alone. Ran my Disco for several years like that. If you want you could tap a thread into the bracket once the turbo is off as it has plenty of meat on it.

Thanks gents for the suggestions, it was one of those afternoon jobs that ground to a halt. I'll have another go tomorrow followed by the drill

Not quite ! Stumped again by the need for a right angle drill for the two rivets nearest the bulkhead on the other side of the of the offending bolt access hole. So nearly there. Smile

I had the same problem two weeks ago. Solution was to use a chisel to "cut" rivets and than grind down head of the screw.
To replace the heat shield, I have riveted is back, and I didn't use the screw any more. With proper twist, the heat shield holds well. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "Blufínek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

Many thanks for your tips, next weekends job now. Possibly going to try and drill out leaving the bracket attached and then reattaching with 4 small bolts (say m4) or self tappers?

I use a set of Irwin bolt grip sockets really good, might be worth getting the engine warm first the give it some heat!

Cheers

Thanks Will, spotted those in the toolstation catalog for ~£20. I'll give that method a go
Cheers

I cut mine off with a grinder. You don't need it.

Just had the same problem Big Cry

After longer and longer bars I finally gave up, went for a run as will suggested and got everything nice and hot pulled on the drive and it came straight out with just a hand ratchet.

Might help someone who finds this thread like me. Thumbs Up

I'll second the irwin grip sockets I've got the snap on set up to 27mm they have been one my best purchases. They have got me out of many a hole working on tractors and plant and of course the defender.
