i carry a spare from and rear prop when i compete, which is what i think you mean by drive shafts.

What size tyres are you running? up 33" if your not doing anything silly you should be fine.

i reckon by using the lockers over the ETC (if you have it) you will go a long way to preserving the transmission.

on puma i would upgrade the inter shaft. other than that i reckon you have all the bases covered. Cheers

Just to be certain, by drive shafts do you mean prop shafts ?

If so then they can fail but it's normally the UJs that cause issues and, as they're relatively easy to change, it's always worth carrying spare UJs - just make sure you get the right size for your shafts !

I have snapped a prop shaft in the past but it's very hard to do unless you have ridiculous rear flex (where the rear axle can drive under the vehicle) or existing damage such as a dent from a rock and a lot of torque. In normal, none competition, off roading you're extremely unlikely to break the propshaft itself.

That said, prior to our solo trip I replaced both propshafts on ours with Bayley Morris versions as they are a lot stronger than the original and have MUCH better splines with linger spline travel. I also made sure that, every few thousand miles, I found a garage and got them to stick a grease gun on the propshafts for me. I didn't want the hassle or mess of carrying a grease gun with me.

Helpful, thx. Yes, meaning propshafts. Halfshafts have been upgraded so Im not worried. I found a US Based compant GREAT BASIN ROVERS who are making heavy duty prop shafts. May just upgrade for piece of mind...

James Thank you again really helpful. Yes, prop shafts is what I mean, sorry to confuse you all. Tires are 31's with 1-2" lift Id say when weighted down. I think they PUMA has ETC but I cant select it-

what do you mean by inter shaft? you got me on a good path thank you

the intermediate shaft between the gbox and t box that ashcroft do an upgrade for.

31s you should be fine,

If you think you may loose the traction i would put the locker in before ETC does its thing, the effects of ETC can quite harsh on the drive train. i posted a video up not so long ago that showed this from our Corsica trip, its in an ETC thread somewhere! Cheers
