Oh dear, back to square one. The garage fitted a new injector harness, starter relay and starter switch. For a few weeks it behaved, starting first time then it resumed the intermittent "misfire" on the first starting attempt. A few nights ago it started on the second attempt but for the first time the orange engine warning light came on. it was driving normally though. I drove around for a while to give it a good blast and to get it properly warmed up. When I got home I thought I would turn it off and restart it to see if the orange engine warning light would go off. I turned the key and nothing ☹️, no turning over and no clicking. I tried again in the morning and it was the same, so I'm guessing the starter motor has burnt out again.
I took my previous starter motor to a specialist and he confirmed that one of the coils on it had failed. He'll properly diagnose it on Monday. One question. Why does my TD5 sound like a two-cylinder tractor on my he first starting attempt, but always starts perfectly the second time? The only other weird problem I experience is that the Landy has now decided it will only unlock when it feels like it! When I use the remote to unlock, the door locks clunk open then immediately clunk as it locks again. I'm not sure whats going on to be honest as I have played with enough and it will behave eventually. The joys of Landy ownership! As I need to use it though so any ideas to solve its problems would be useful. Thanks. |

Locks relocking is a common issue with defenders there is another recent thread on here somewhere
http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic51916.html Starter motor failures I believe have been known to be FPR leaking diesel down the back of the engine. Last edited by Cactus79 on 28th Jan 2017 7:04pm. Edited 1 time in total |

Sorry, forget to mention that the fuel pressure relief isn't leaking at all.

1. If you unlock driver door with key wait happens ? 2. do you have two key fob if so try second one to open doors Why does my TD5 sound like a two-cylinder tractor on my he first starting attempt air in the fuel system ? 1.Try running fuel perjure to start with be for starting the engine 2. injector seals, have they been replace. fuel can leak down to the sump you will see oil level raised 3. also if copper seal at tip of the injectors is letting by you can end up gas in the fuel system |

Sorry for the delay in posting an update. To cut a very long story short, my auto-electrician says that the starter motors aren't engaging while the engine is already running. Both the starter ring teeth and cogs on the failed starter motors are in very good condition. It would appear that, when starting, the starter motor is being momentarily subjected to 600 amps load when it should be nearer 350 amps. This is probably why the starter motors keep burning out. He's back tomorrow to see why 600 amps is being passed through the starter system.
Had anyone else had this problem? Thanks |
