Rear step fitting advice
Help fitting rear folding step to TD5 90
Seemed very simple but came with 2 what seem to be sleeve nuts is my best description which fit inside holes in rear crossmember including a hex fitting at top even though they do not appear on parts list or fitting diagram.
I would presume they fit in holes and then nuts go through step into sleeve nuts and tighten to rear crossmember however they fit perfectly in holes and bolts tighten up but wont go through holes in step. Are they just not drilled out enough or am I completely missing a trick as I am not particularly mechanical but managed to fit side steps with no problem!!
Any advice appreciated

Hello Mick,
It sounds as though you've been supplied with Rivnuts - please see below:

http://www.bollhoff.co.uk/en/uk/fasteners/...rivnut.php

There's plenty of info on the Internet.

Personally I didn't use the Rivnuts when I replaced my rear step - I drilled them out and fitted stainless steel M8 bolts.

That said, if your existing Rivnuts are sound, then it might be worth running a tap through them to clean the threads up.

Apologies if I've misinterpreted your post, however there are plenty of forum members who can and will lend a hand Thumbs Up

Hello Mick,

I have just come across your post having hit the same problem [I think]; I got the sleeve or barrel nuts through the crossmember and connected to the step, but it leaves a gap of about 10-15mm between the bolt and the crossmember, allowing the step to swing and bang against the frame.

Did you manage to solve the problem? If so, how did you do it.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Best wishes,

Michael

Hi if it is the britpart step as I had I returned it got my money back then reordered it through my local supplier and paid for them to fit it
They fitted it only to find the same problem they didn't charge me for time to fit and they retuned to Britpart and claimed fitting charge off them
I then ordered a genuine one off the although was a lot more expensive it is more than capable of the job
Hope that helps
There were various videos on line helping etc
Good luck

It was a Bearmach step but the problem sounds identical; when the bolts and connected to the nuts, there is simply too much of a gap and the whole step rattled and bangs against the underneath of the vehicle. I shall have another look and maybe look to swap the nut and bold combination - though anything other than the self-closing nut will be a pain in the crossmember.

Thank you for the tip.

Michael
