United Kingdom 2002 Defender 110 Td5 Black LE Java Black
Td5 Central Locking Actuator
Evening All

I couldn't find the welcome area so thought I'd prefix my first question with an intro... This is my 1st post despite lurking for many months since acquiring my latest Land Rover - a 2002 Black LE Defender Td5 DCPU. My other LR is a 101 and I also had an SIII Lightweight until a few months ago.

The 110 is 3/4 through a complete door set replacement at the moment and along the way I'm trying to fix other things. One of which is the front passenger door locking mechanism. It works pretty well - no problems with locking via the key or the central locking. The problem is that in order to open the door from the inside you have to lift the sill button whilst pulling on the door release handle. The button tends to drop down and prevent the door opener from actuating the latch. I reckon the problem is inside the central locking actuator, which I've opened up - see photo.

The plunger is very easy to move up & down - I suspect too easily hence it not supporting the weight of the button. However - I can't see anything obviously wrong in the actuator mechanism - my guess is that there should be a friction device inside the gold banded cylinder between the grey metal gear and the plunger. Has anyone else had this problem and succeeded in repairing it?

Thanks in advance

John

Are you sure it just doesn't want the rod adjusting? Ray

That was my initial thought/hope, but after I wound the rod up to position the button correctly the actuator wouldn't lock the door.

I have found with a couple of mine that they get weak and slow with age so I replaced as necessary but I've not had or heard of any that work fine but drop during driving. I don't think anyone sells any of the internal parts seperately so you may struggle to fix it, but new ones aren't too expensive. Ray

Thanks. I'll hold fire on a new one until I've compared it to the driver's door part (which has no button droop).

Update

The driver's door actuator was less floppy so I got a new one for the passenger door. But that didn't make any difference Sad However, the mechanism now works perfectly thanks to the zero cost modification in the photo...

So, if you have button droop, don't buy a new actuator - just add some elastic assistance Smile

Looks like it's your door locking mech that's at fault then and not your actuator. Ray
