Td5 gearbox...won't select gears
Sat here at the side of the road...a normal location for a Land Rover owner.

Just left home...cold gearbox. Got a mile or so from home and snuck I couldn't select 5th drat. Try the others with no luck. So coasted to the bottom of the hill and found a safe place to get off the road.

With engine on or off I can't move the gear lever left for 1&2., 3rd almost wants to select but just is snicking the gears. 4th won't open. 5&R I can move to but can't get into the gates to select. It's been a pain since purchase to get into 3rd and reverse at times. There was some noise from the thrust bearing when I first got it but that has died off with me using it for work most days.

Any ideas on the cause and if it is a new box or just a few bits in the top?

2000 reg Defender Td5 110 with 105k miles on the clocks.

The word from the chap who has kindly recovered me home was if the clutch was gone you should still be able to select gears with the engine off.

The lever won't move to the left so will investigate after a cup of tea. I suspect worn selector.

Going from memory from my TD5 Discovery, I think there are two locator springs in the top of the gearbox which guide the gearchange. These are prone to breaking and jamming the gearchange.
Hope it is a simple fix.

Looks like problems with the selector shaft in the gearbox. I cannot be of help, as I have not repaired beyond where you are.
Hopefully others on the forum with more experience will offer help and advice.

Sod it!

Ordered replacement gearbox and clutch from Ashcroft. Not what I wanted to do with less than 4 months of ownership but at least I will have a known box in there. If I could warrant having the box on the bench for a while as I work out what bits are broken I would just by new bits to replace the broken parts but currently my time is short so will just swap the gearbox over.

I ordered the clutch as it is typical that I will go to do the work only to find the clutch is almost knackered when I go to swap the gearbox.

I was tempted but the HD bearings and the longer 5th gear but went for stock setup as I think I may just upgrade the transfer box.

Now is there any sensible guides on how to remove the gearbox without dismantling best part of the vehicle?

If it's the grub screw it can be done from inside the vehicle with minimal dismantling.

Definitely worth checking before dropping a wad on a new gearbox...

After waiting a few weeks for Ashcroft tp build a box for me (they are built to order) and send it. I now can say I have a new gearbox in the Defender.

Once we had the old one out we took a look at it and it was the grub screw at the rear of the gearbox that had worn a groove in the shaft and had eventually come out. So 'Retroanaconda' was correct and it was possible to fix it so I could continue driving. But it wasn't just a loose grub screw as it was still tight and held in with the Loctite.

Only issues I have not is second like a little bit of left before the move up to 3rd. This was made worse by the Slickshift so I am back to standard for now. I hope it just needs bedding in.
