Mystery plug
I'm part way through re-wiring the rear lights on my 90. I'm fitting later plug-in ones and adapting the loom to suit. Anyway, I've discovered an unknown plug that appears to be part of the original loom that runs between the two light clusters across the back of the rear cross member. The plug is located centrally, essentially behind the tow bar. It's a circular, five pin plug, although I think it only has four pins connected. I haven't had chance to do any testing on it yet as half of the wiring is still in bits.

It's location suggests towing electrics, but it doesn't seem to have enough pins to give all the usual functions.

Anybody got any ideas? I haven't seen anything like it before. Darren

Off the top of my head, on the 110 200tdi that I recently rewired, it had the fuel tank pump and sender wiring in that location, coming off the halfway point with a similar connector. Depending on your engine & tank configuration, it may be something to do with that? Hmm, thanks for that. It does sound plausible but mine's a 90 with the tank under the drivers seat Confused I'm pretty confident that the loom is original and it can't be a 110 loom as that'd be far too long.

Any other 90 owners got the same unused plug?

If it stops raining, I'll try and get a photo later. Darren

It was not uncommon for Land Rover to use 110 looms on 90 models, which means you end up with a plug at the back there. Just leave it disconnected, it will do no harm.

Towing connection is made behind rear o/s lights.

Spent yesterday replacing my chassis loom on my 90, that was an unpleasant job but at least I have reliable (hopefully) rear lights again now!

I know all about the towing electrics! I spent a couple of hours yesterday turning this:

The Wago connectors give me all of the connections I need to reinstall the towing electrics without resorting to Scotch locks. I'll need to alter and re-route the 12S wiring though, as I'm swapping over to a single 13 pin socket. Darren

To be fair, it all worked and was completely logical. It may have even been an original installation as Scotch locks were all the rage 25 years ago and optional extra looms weren't as sophisticated as todays plug in versions. Updating the lighting to the latest version did give me the excuse to remove all of those joints though, which has got to be a good thing for ongoing reliability. Darren

laugh is you have asked the question I was going to ask, I have found two connectors under mine, on the left hand side. I wondered what they were for.
What loom did you use for your lights? also where did you get these replacements for the scotch locks?
I will be doing the rear door loom, so I will inside there. Defender TD5 90 ---/--- Peugeot 306 HDI hatch back

The vehicle loom is the original - I haven't changed it, just removed all of the bullet connectors. For the individual lights. I made up simple leads with Econoseal connectors on one end. In most cases, I just shortened the original wiring.

I got the Wago connectors from Screwfix.
