Now need to find a company that can make bespoke instrument dials for the Puma... Hate the fact it will say Diesel on the dash when it becomes a petrol!!!

James

Bristol, Lovely mods mate, BUT, they will all pale into insignificance when you put the pedal to the metal with that LS3 under the bonnet,...remember I said it!!
Can't wait for further developments!
Pickles.
NB:Just one more thing, what about the LSA rather than the LS3, both can be bought as crate engines, the LSA is the supercharged version of the LS3,...around 530HP,...think about it, the engine cost would not be much more.

@ Stacey - have had one or two conversations with Andrew, mostly by email and he has been a massive help to get to the stage where i was ready to go with the conversion. Andrews 110 wouldn't work for me as i need the rear bench seats to be flexible for stuff in the rear. Andrew has been a massive help and source of advice though!

@Pickles - have already asked Wildcat about it and they are looking in to it. Agree you can buy both engines at roughly same cost but would definitely have to upgrade halfshafts, diffs, steering rods etc with that sort of torque. Would be awesome though!!!

110 does look better than in photos above as done have the Nemesis wheels and tarox brakes fitted nor the black side steps and laser front LED lights. Looks a lot better now!

Wil add photos as I go.

If you drop an LS3 into your Defender, and you "drive it like you stole it", the driveline ain't gonna hold up no matter whether you drop an LS3 in or the LSA, but driven respectfully, I reckon both engines will be Ok,...but if it were mine, I'd want the H.D. stuff in anyway, even for LS3...are you sourcing the matching GM 6 speed auto?
Bear in mind, with the LSA engine, it is just as "docile" as the LS3,maybe more so,. as ya don't have to rev it as hard, because ya've got massive low down torque. It is an absolute ripper engine, and is the base engine for our HSV Commodores,...just a lovely lazy V8, but with all the muscle you'll ever need, when & if you want it.
There are not many with the "wherewithall" to do what you're doing, in many respects, so, from me, BIG respect to you.
All I'm saying is, there'd be virtually no extra work, relative to what you're already going to do, to go with an LSA,....I can assure you, you would not regret it, for one second.
Pickles.

I was impressed going from 120hp up to 170hp, I can't imagine what 500hp would like in a Defender!! Ok I know brakes, suspension and drive train can/are all uprated, but is 500hp just not too much? All depends how you drive you I guess. James

Hi Pickles - yep you're right the engines aren't different outside of power output, and would be easy upgrade. Looking at partsworldperformnce.com there's an RRP difference of £1100 between the 430bhp and the 525bhp. Tech specs say there are a few changes including mapping and camshaft. Have been thinking about going for higher powered output and was planning to talk to wildcat tomorrow. Either way yes will be matched to a GM 6 speed auto with LT230 attached to the rear of it. Some very impressive engineering has gone into this from wildcat and also would appear to solve the spline wear issue of the standard setup 😄

@James - yes me too am running BAS tune with uprated intercooler, use premium diesel and 2 stroke and runs very very smoothly. But hate the sound! Even with premium fuel and 2 stroke quietening it down it still sounds Massey ferguson! But you're absolutely right was a massive difference!! I do try to drive with mechanical sympathy but I have two young babies so last thing I want to have is mechnical breakdown so will most likely upgrade the half shafts and rear diffs. Andrew upgraded his steering rods too which he says made a difference so will most likely follow his advice (as normal!!) and do those too.

Just to add there is 'only' 65lb/ft between the 430bhp engine at 424lb/ft and the 525bhp at 489lb/ft.

Standard Puma torque is 265lb/ft or 360Nm.

BAS tune takes it to 324lb/ft or 440Nm.

So engine is a massive upgrade on torque from standard LR build. Would be interesting to know what LR rate the max torqued of the diff and halshafts etc. Only parts of driveline left will be shafts and diffs as gearbox will be changed and apparently the LT230 is bulletproof!

Planning to call Ashcroft tomorrow to see what they can do and recommend.

If you went LSA, you might be the first to go this way,...Twisted will have to stand up & take note of. "The new kid on the block"?

Likewise can't wait to see more Shocked Like you say if extra cost is minimal you might as well get the most you reasonable can, you don't to use all the horse power Rolling with laughter Shocked

Me being the old woman I am sometimes, I do wonder why if the LSA is available with lots of benefits and little downside, why aren't the likes of Twisted using it?

Jow,...Hello from Aussie.
Not using LSA?...because many haven't heard of it. Most know about LS1,2, & 3, but there'd be many who've not heard of the Supercharged LSA. It's well known in Aussie as it's 430KW of power is very well used in our factory modified HSV Commodores,..there's thousands of them around, so the LSA is pretty well known here, but maybe not so much in the U.K?
The amazing thing about it is, well with any of the LS group I suppose, that it can be driven by a little old lady to church on Sunday, or on the racetrack by enthusiasts, but the LSA is the ultimate, unless of course where you chose the LS9 which is used to power the ZR1 Corvette,..it's got around 480KW!!,..and HSV have just released a Commodore fitted with one,.... the W1,..only 300 of them at around $200K,..all pre sold,...it'll be the fastest Aussie Muscle car, ever!
LS9 would be a bit over the top for a Defender though, it uses a dry sump, has special internals, almost a racing engine etc!
Pickles.

Pickles,

Been looking at the engines available, and can't seem to find any labelled LSA. There seem to be 4 types of LS3 though rated from 430bhp to 525bhp. However none of these use a supercharger and just have an uprated ASA Camshaft. Looks like the LSA is anout 550bhp and £12k so not much more than van be achieved with the camshaft upgrade?

There is a supercharged engine but that is called LS9 and is 600+ bop and over £16k!!

Here is where I am looking: http://www.partsworldperformance.com/chevrolet-ls-engines

Quite tempted to go for the camshaft upgrade as that seems very reasonable for the power vs cost!

That site shows the LSA engine,...2nd line down, 2nd from left!.
It ain't just a camshaft, it comes with a supercharger, which is an integral part of the LSA engine!!..the LSA is a factory built supercharged engine, have another look at it, the image shown is the crate engine with the supercharger fitted, that's what you get with LSA!!....it's all there, just bolt it in, just like an LS3, but with HEAPS more grunt.
There's a lot more to it than just the supercharger.
See my prior post re LS9!
Regards, Pickles.

Thanks Pickles, that's interesting and I appreciate your reply.

OK I'm just quickly browsing out of curiosity/interest/nosiness but to me it looks like te LSA is nearly twice the price of the LS3? What am I missing? Embarassed

Also I'm not sure what quantity of conversions Wildcat do but presumably the more they do the cheaper the conversion will become? I'm just thinking that our Defender is hopefully a keeper for many years to come and with all the current diesel bashing, if the engine ever did need replacing, you'd seriously have to look at petrol conversions... Well looking at it, it's around Four thousand pounds+ more,..depending upon which version of the LS3 you choose, which, when comparing the prices of the engine alone, is a fair old jump.
BUT, if you factor the engine cost increase into the total cost of the conversion, which from what I've read is around twenty five -thirty thousand pounds, the percentage increase is not so dramatic,...adding less than 20% of the total cost. IMHO, if ya're spending that sort of money, after a year or so of ownership, ya're not only going to forget about the increased dollars, ya're gonna be super glad ya went LSA, because it is a REAL step up.
BUT, I ain't belittling LS3, which is a brilliant engine, and any Defender with such an engine will be a wonderful thing, just saying "in for a penny, in for a pound"!
Pickles.
