This will no doubt lead to half of people saying Land Rover and the other half saying it doesn't matter.
The reason I'm asking this is because some people on this form have said that 1) Land Rover doesn't actually make the filter so you can buy it from the company that makes it without the Land Rover logo for cheaper and 2) there are better quality filters available. The filter brands I have found so far ie LPX100590 include: Britpart, Mahle, Allmakes, Bearmach, Filtron, Coppers Fiam, and of course Land Rover. Personally only use LR or Mahle, mostly because the oil filter tool works with these.

I just read that. This is what the paddock spares site says:
NOTE: These wrenches are designed to fit filters manufactured with cut-out for the wrenches teeth. Known suitable filters are Genuine Land Rover & Britpart. These wrenches are not suitable for some aftermarket filters such as Mahle or UFI. Mann and Mahle for me. Both excellent quality, both OEM for various manufacturers.

LR or Mahale, be careful as some aftermarket ones are slightly longer, and are a
 to fit and remove, the space is tight enough as it is  |

I ended up buying two filter pack from LRdirect. One is the actual Land Rover filter pack and the other is the "premium" filter package which translates into a Mann air filter, Mahle oil filter lpx100590, Mann zr700x filter which is the secondary filter and Coopers fiaam fuel filter.
Comparing the two with out tearing them apart I can come up with the following: The Land Rover fuel filter has a slight edge because it comes with the plug as shown. I actually have the water sensor attatchrd to mine but it's nice to have the plug included should anything happen! The filter in the coopers is also exposed a little more than the Land Rover. Over all build quality tips to Land Rover. For the air filter the quality is also tipped to Land Rover. It probably doesn't make a difference in terms of ability to filter, especially considering the extra cost. As pictured the oil filter spanner only fits the Land Rover filter and not the Mahle filter. Overall build quality seems similar but the Land Rover part has an extra internal rubber seal. Once again the overall quality seems slightly tipped to Land Rover. For the secondary filter, MANN this time, these two parts are absolutely identical. For this part, at least, I think we have found the manufacturer for Land Rover! Overall a slight edge to Land Rover but the Filter pack cost about 3x more which is hard to justify if all the filters are changed every 6 months... I have to say that landrover filters are generally cheaper than aftermarket ones from motor factors. Certainly local to me that is the case

As an aside, I am very anti oil filter spanners. I've never had a filter that I fitted that I couldn't remove by hand!
Smear of engine oil on the seal when you install and tighten by hand. |
