Trolley Jack cradle to remove transfer box
My LT230 will need swapped out sometime this year due leaky input oil seals. On the logic that if the input is going the rest of the seals are likely on their way out I was thinking of getting a upgraded box from Ashcroft and swapping them (since the Euro / Pound exchange rate is good at the mo anyway). I intend to jack up the back axle on stands and pull out the transfer box from underneath using a cradle on the trolley jack.
Does anybody have a recommendation of a good trolley jack cradle / adaptor which works well on the transfer box and will also be robust enough to take the gearbox next time the clutch needs swapped?

I believe Clark and Draper both do attachments for their trolley jacks to do this. I have toyed with the idea in the past, but not committed to buying one yet.

One thing. It would be better to leave the back axle on the ground as aligning and then fitting the transfer box on to the mainshaft splines will be much easier.

Also. Make yourself a series of guide bolts to aid in lining the box up, two will do screwed in to the threaded holes on the R380 gearbox. Easily made from long bolts with the head cut off.

Be prepared with an R380 rear output seal as well as this could be the culprit for the leak...

I have swapped out a few transferboxes and for me the easiest way was to disconnect the box and just lay under it and slowly slide the box off onto myself then onto the floor. Not the easiest job for smaller or older less agile people though.

Oh one more thing if someone says they have disconnected it then check, I trusted my mate once and then had a whole gearbox come out still attached but no casing Rolling with laughter got me a little dirty to say the least. 90 wolf - Jasmin http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic39408.html

Are they not a bit of a heavy item? I have visions of landing a transfer box on my face...considering I'm not the best looking to start of with it will only make matter worse.. Shocked

I found a Sealey 3 ton with a specific gearbox cradle, a bit spendy but cheaper than plastic surgery Very Happy

It's an MT82, I haven't heard of them having the same problem...unless somebody knows better.

I don't know if you have a roll cage.

I have and that is very usefull. I have some big Lashings? (The yellow things I tie my 90 down on a trailer).

I opened my doors and used one to make a loope over the roof and another one from that in the 90 down to around the tranfer box. and a small one in my hand to keep it straight.

The transfer box is not really heavy but a little difficult to lift in a small space above you. Roel

The transfer box weighs 65kg,I have swapped mine on my own, just layed underneath the truck, the most awkward thing is it is heavier to one side.
A good tip I picked up was, when you unbolt it from the gearbox, replace 2 or 3 of the bolts with 100/120mm legnths of threaded bar, slide the T/B off with the aid of the threaded bar so it comes off straight & dousen't damage the seal,or splines.
Also makes it easier to line it up when you put it back on.
Thumbs Up
Marc

if you take the cubby box out and the panel underneath it you can access the top of the transfer box. If you dont have an engine crane, you can get a couple of mates and a length of 4x2 with some strops and lower it down.

Great tip, do you happen to remember the diameter of the thread?

I picked up a transmission jack adapter off eBay for working on my classic fiat 500...
https://www.ebay.de/itm/172516239837

It was perfect for pulling out and replacing the engine and gearbox on that in one go...

So it would handle a Defender gearbox ok.

Cheers, Steve
