So my head gasket failed, see thread: http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic51943.html
Having had it pressure tested the head is good (phew) but the engineering company has skimmed it prior to return to my garage... so here's my question/concern... According to LR the Td5 head cannot be skimmed... but I've read various threads where people have done it with no issues... Anyone on here with first hand experience, good or bad, of skimming a Td5 head? What recourse do I have with the garage if they have the head skimmed and it all goes pear shaped? |

i cant comment on warranty but the firm that skims mine will not warranty the engine as it used and they cannot control how it is built etc what oil is used is it run it properly, did they reuse the single use bolts etc etc
there are 2 head gasket thicknesses i believe and you would need to know how much they took off when it was skimmed. |

There are actually 3 thicknesses of head gasket available and they are selected depending on piston protrusion. You should be fine to refit the same thickness head gasket that was removed. 2001 90 HT 6.0LS/6spdAuto.

Infused to work in an engine shop, and did quite a few head skims for main dealers and heads that can't be skimmed,
Somewhere ( if they look hard enough) there will be a minimum head thickness for the actual main casting, If the head remains within this after skimming, and the correct gasket used which is determined by piston protrusion, all was well and the main dealers were happy to go along that route, We NEVER skimmed a head under minimum thickness for a main dealer Hope this helps a bit ? |

Thanks all... the garage has said they will speak to the engineering place and ask how much they took off so I await the response and next steps.

Confirmed they took off 5 thou, will this be okay with a standard gasket? |

Well yesterday the engine was fired up after rebuilding the engine with the 5 thou skimmed head. Imagine my delight to hear her spring back to life, and she's running sweet as a button. Can't wait to get her back on Monday!

Skimmed loads of Td5 heads and never had any problems too.
