United Kingdom 2005 Defender 110 2.5 TD SW Zambezi Silver
LED Headlights.
The headlights on my 2005 Defender 110 Td5 Station Wagon are decidedly yellow and need upgrading.

As someone not very good at d-i-y I need to buy something which will be very easy to fit.

Are there LED headlights on the market which are a direct replacement of my existing flickering candles?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I'm very pleased with my Guardian Automotive SB1LED units, and they were direct plug in replacements.

When fitting new headlights, fit one at a time so you can set the level of the other. Now gone - 2012 2.2 110 DC XS

Bear in mind they all need to be 'E' marked to be road legal.

Just to be sure, otherwise they are useless.

I'm very pleased with my Noldens, but they are top dollar I know.

Also raw Lumens is often an exacerbated figure compared to the usable lumen output.
They can be vastly different abd many manufacturers will not disclose.
It's also difficult to decipher to quality of internal electronics and driver.

I have the Noldens. I will say that the light output is vastly increased, but the spread of light has a definite hard edge (ie. the road ahead is either lit or unlit). This doesn't sound as though it would be a problem, I just wonder what an upgraded incandescent set up would be like, as from experience of other normal lights, you get a soft edge to the light spread, and as a result, get a more gentle warning of upcoming obstacles.

Please accept my apology for a rambling response but it just coincided with my thoughts very recently, and I live in a fairly rural area!

I had Crystals with upgraded bulbs previously.
Is that what you mean?

The beam edge is just the nature of LED's as I think it is just more defined the output is better with LED but it's more clear cut.

For price, Crystals and upgraded bulbs and loom are a brilliant mod.
Definitely one I'd do again, but prefer the LED's but there is a considerable price difference.

I have the JW Speaker Eolution 2. Very happy with the output on both low and high beam.

Installation couldn't be easier. Direct replacement for the existing units, plug & play. it's a Landrover thing...

Yes that's what I was thinking. I do like the Noldens and I would probably do the same again. I had not tried the upgrade option though.

Alexj - Well the Crystals are good, but not as good.
They also have the Halogen yellow tinge which you always do get to a very minor degree.
Although nothing compared to the yellow Quadoptics OE candles.

Going from Quadoptics to Crystal with Upgrade bulbs is a significant upgrade.
Upgrading the loom is another slight uograde of them again.

I went for a Land Reziger loom then the Noldens, nothing really to gain as they are regulated voltage wise but I like the circuit isolation that a Relay switched loom creates.
With loom the voltage is improved which can only be seen as a good thing, it also still takes the load off the switch AND prevents ANY possible voltage leakage.
There is also less current draw from the Noldens.

However, if someone wanted a cheaper significant upgrade in the intermediate.
(Or they wanted to stick to it by personal choice)
The Crystals maje a great upgrade, I stuck with them for a good while before finally deciding to purchase the Noldens.

The Noldens are worth their value.

IIRC some of the European vans and trucks run a flat dipped beam, suitable for left and right hand drive, I wish one of the LED companies would follow suit with a E marked, non handed 7" light.

Years ago I had Cibie round units that had a simple tab on the back that swapped it from left to right by twisting the bulbs, was handy driving in France...

Looking at a couple of the American LED websites their dipped beams look flat, but not E marked.

I spent a long time researching LEDs.

Sorry they are all Jeeps but the headlight are the same Razz

I ended up getting the EVO 2s. They are unreal. You loose the "classic" look but you gain unreal light that doesn't blind oncoming traffic when the high beams are off.
