Rear shock absorber removal.
I'm afraid this will seem like a VERY basic question but...

I need to change the rear shock absorber rubber bushes. My question is, do I need to "decompress " the shocks, i.e. Have the rear axle hang free by supporting the chassis, or can I take them off whilst supporting the vehicle by axle stands under the rear axle.

If I do have to support the chassis where is the best place to support it? Can I support it under the rear cross member?

Thanks,

No, just remove the wheel for access and there'll be plenty of room with the axle on a suitable stand. If the shock is gas-filled then it will try to extend once removed, so it'll need to be compressed down again to re-fit but this isn't difficult.

Lower nuts can be fun to undo if they've been on a while, I've had to cut them off before.

Thanks for that, they are the standard shocks, not sure if gas filled.

Hopefully the nuts will be ok 😳

You can do them in situ, no jack or anything at all. You can compress them by hand.
Bear in mind as I'm sure you are aware that there are torque figures for all of these findings.
Bets replaced with new once removed ideally too. Diesels Lives Matter. ⛽️🛢️👨‍🔧🧰⚙️
