No, just remove the wheel for access and there'll be plenty of room with the axle on a suitable stand. If the shock is gas-filled then it will try to extend once removed, so it'll need to be compressed down again to re-fit but this isn't difficult.
Lower nuts can be fun to undo if they've been on a while, I've had to cut them off before. |

Thanks for that, they are the standard shocks, not sure if gas filled.

You can do them in situ, no jack or anything at all. You can compress them by hand.
