Rear Brakes won't bleed? 110 300tdi
Ello all

I've got a funny issue,

I've recently rebuilt all my calipers as they were past their best but the pedal is spongy as anything now it's all back together. It pumps up okay. I've bled litres of fluid through everywhere

I've clamped everything at the flexis and the pedal becomes stiff so the MC seems okay.

With the rear flexi clamped the brake pedal is normal, so it seems to be rear flexi backward.

Both rear calipers have been changed, with new pads etc. The longer brake line is also new.

No fluid is escaping and no air coming out of bleed nipples.

Any suggestions what i'm missing?

Calipers on the right sides? Bleed nipple at the top?

Have you tried an Eazi-Bleed?

Since you're not averse to using clamps, I wonder are you clamping the front calipers while bleeding the rear? If you did that you'd get more flow through per stroke.

I've found that fluid momentum is what gets the bubbles through, so the faster and more steady you can process it the better (within reason).

Also, did you try to prime the caliper quite well before installation? I'm not sure how successful the procedure was but it made sense to me to fill it up with fluid then rotate it randomly with outlets temporarily plugged until they were on the top side then putting more fluid as the air came up.

In my case the bubbles just never ended, odd that you're seeing none, it's likely holed up at a high point? Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

I had problems to bleed an od car - rubber brake hoses were old, metal wires in the hoses corroded (grew its diameter) and nearly closed the inner rubber tube. I was able to press the bake fluid, but not the air, and the tubes worked like one way valve, so the callipers looked like stuck. So check also the state of the hoses. "Drobek" = The Small One - Discovery 2, "BlufĂ­nek" = The Blue Thing - Defender 130, and for me at least Ford Mondeo Smile

as Jamies post calipers right way up?

try fast movement of fluid to shift air such as eazi bleed system. whole system like that can take 3L or so on a 90 with eazi bleed. Cheers

Thanks for your suggestions all..

The issue has evolved somewhat.

I changed the flexis for Stainless goodridge ones - no change
I changed the brake master cyl, with no apparent difference. (TRW)

I noticed a crack in the servo housing and changed the servo.

Now the pedal was sinking to the floor slowly after good initial pressure.

I changed the brake master cyl AGAIN (BEARMACH)
Now the front brakes are good, BUT the rears, only get a pulse of braking power and then allowed to free wheel again. The pedal drops almost to the floor.

What am I missing here folks? I've got through 8 litres of brake fluid Big Cry

It's like the brake master cyl is only sending a little pressure down the rear circuit - when you crack the line with the pedal pushed hard down, no jet of fluid comes out. [center]

Nothing above made any real difference!

I use a buddy on the pedal.and a one way bleeder. [center]

Is it possibly something to do with the brake proportioning valve?

I seem to remember there is one fitted on Defenders that determines the pressure split between front and rear brake circuits?

You tried clamping the front lines, and bled near to a full reservoirs fluid with great buddy to buddy timing such that the bubbles were forced past their hidey hole?

You removed and primed the caliper rotating it to let the bubbles find their way out?

If so, sorry, I'll let more knowledgeable folk chime in!

(but can report I've done the same with success..) Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...
