Thermostat
Hi All,

Driving into work this morning I got caught in traffic and my engine temp dropped to cold. It was about -2 out and I was stationary for twenty minutes. My thermostat is only 12 months old and a genuine item and the coolant level is fine. Any advice?

Thanks

James

I think it's something they all do. the engine doesn't give out enough heat so the heater just cools it down.

Every rev it a bit when it cools or fit a rad muff. I'm running around with a radiator muff/cover at the minute 2014 - current ..... 2003 defender td5 90 (my car)

To combat this I removed my viscous fan. Have had it removed for nearly 2 years now and not the slightest hint of overheating. If you are worried about it you could just remove it for the winter Thumbs Up

Even with a rad muff if you still have the fan it still draws cold air in Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I had an off-road event last weekend and had the same. When idling for a while the gauge showed cold but I still got warm air from the heater. Looking at my nanocom the Coolant temp was still somewhere in the 60 C area, so it's not that it gets really cold. Roel

It is strange though as I thought that the thermostat bypasses The radiator when cold in order to keep things at the corrrect working temperature. Surely you should not need to remove the fan and cover the rad of there is nothing flowing through it?

The fan will still be blowing cold air across the engine block and also if the ambient temperature is low it will help cool the engine internally as it is drawn in. Although the effects of these are small - on an engine that already produces little heat it will have a noticeable effect! 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I think most off the heat is going to your heater to try to warm the interior up. Roel

It would be worth checking your viscous fan is in good order. If it seizes in the locked position it will obviously suck more cold air through your rad.

The other thing I have seen is someone fitting an auxilary pump in the coolant system to assist the standard pump whilst sitting in traffic. The idea was that the engine was still hot enough but the coolant flowing through the heater matrix wasn't moving fast enough to heat the incoming air. I cannot however remember if the system worked, but it is a good solution.

Heated seats make life a little more comfortable, easy mod too.

After that it is time to think about an auxilary diesel heater.

I need to fit a rad muff to mine, just doesn't get that hot in the winter!

Not going to remove the fan as I do use it for a fair bit of heavy towing.

I can thoroughly recommend this one, the Combo Cover, made by a small company called GlobeRoamer:

This is the second one I've had and is a refinement on the original design. It can be opened to any degree by way of two zips.

Also available in canvas. Darren

Same problem - so viscous fan removed and twin electric fans fitted to an XEng X-Fan Thermostatic Fan Switch; Rad Muff fitted and also changed the cap on the header tank as pressure wasn't being held as much as it should and replaced the thermostat. Adventure isn't paved!
