15W40 oil okay for the TD5?
Just did an oil and filter change with 15W/40. The manual says 5W/40 and doesn't mention the 15W.

Is there a potential problem in using 15W/40 in the TD5?

The first digit (in this case 15 or 5) denotes the viscosity of the oil at low temperatures: the lower the number, the more fluid the oil is when cold. If your profile is correct you are living in a beautiful yet very cold part of the world. Maybe other people can tell you otherwise out of experience, but I wouldn't feel at ease with 15W...

Greetings,

Joris

Yeah 15w40 will be too viscous when cold so won't lubricate the engine properly on cold starting. Stick with the recommended 5w30 Thumbs Up 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I'd say not, too thick when cold.

Also would personally buy more specific td5/of engine oils.

It won't harm the engine but will use a little more fuel.
You will only get actual lubrication issues at temperatures below about -20 deg C

I like to use 5w 40 in mine, I find that the engine is a bit quieter than when I use 5w 30 probably starting to get a bit more clearance in the journals now. Ray

If his avatar is right he lives in Canada so -20c is highly likely! 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon

I'd be concerned with the 15W when it gets to zero or near zero. Stick wth the 5W and fully synth. Winter in Nanaimo is a lot milder than here in the Ottawa Valley but be wary of low temps when you use 15W oil. Cheers 2010 Range Rover MkIII Autobiography Super Charged (Idris)

Well yes, in Canada l'd be looking at 5w/30 or 5w/40 for the reasons stated above.

I did not notice l thought he was in the UK!

On Vancouver Island it rarely gets below zero at sea level but obviously once you head into the mountains the temperature quickly drops. Regardless it sounds like 5W 30/40 synthetic is the consensus. Thanks again.
