Australia 2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Alpine White
series 3 gearbox issue
Hi folks,
I'm slowly restoring my 88in series 3. Runs well but has an issue with both 1st and 2nd gears jumping out of gear on overrun. Pulls fine under load but instantly jumps out when coasting back down my hill to home. I am wondering whether it is the gear selectors or more likely a worn bearing or something. Before I drop the gearbox and send it off for reconditioning, I would appreciate any feedback or suggestions.

It's a long time since I played with a Series box but I, too, remember something about detent springs. If I recall correctly, they can be accessed by removing a small plate on top of the 'box, underneath the middle of the seat box. Darren

Yes the detent springs are a strong possibility. Remove the floors, centre tunnel, and bell housing cover. The 1st/2nd selector shaft is the middle shaft, and it's detent spring is under the brass plug. It's dead easy to change the spring.

It is possible to undo the selector cover and inspect the condition of the selector shafts, you may find that the notches in the shafts have wear in them where the detent balls have been locating. If so, you can renew them without removing the box.

However, you have to judge the chance of success against the overall condition of the rest of the box. If the synchro hubs are also worn, it could still jump out of gear.

if not the indents i think it may be the syncro rings on these gears. if this is the case it's a complete strip job. fingers crossed it'snot. 110 xs s/wagon
