Brake line flare Sykes Pickavant
Hi,

Having read through various threads I ordered a nice flaring tool that comes with op1 and op2 dyes. Do you know which flare to use on the defender td5 brake lines? I cannot work out how to produce a 'double flare' which I think may be needed as the instructions are terrible !

Hi,

I think I may have figured it out.....clamp the pipe and use the op1 tool to make a kind of ball and then leave it clamped in place and use the op2 tool (looks like a cone) to produce the flare. I was releasing the pipe in between tools and resetting it which gave seriously ugly results!

AFAIK the SP is the same as the Snap-on bluepoint so for male unions you use OP1, for female unions you need a double flare so firstly use the OP1 then use the OP2 to create it.

So for instance when you do the 'jumpers' on the calipers, the female unions onto the hose use a double flare and you see when offered up the hose's Male end, the flare sits nicely against it and creates a good seal when the union is done up.

Double flares are formed by creating the male end and then using the tapered flaring tool to invert the end into a female. There are 2 types of flare nut the SAE type have a straight shoulder and the DIN type a beveled shoulder, be careful to us the correct nut with tthe correct flare type.
Have a look on good old Utube I'm sure there mudt be a video. Thumbs Up I started with nothing and still have most of it left!

Thanks for taking the time to do that. I haven't seen any mention of chamfering the edges before, is this common practise on all models? Honestly the directions with the one I have are pathetic!

To be honest i don't bevel the pipe to start with, just make sure its cuts square and clean.
Draper flaring tooling instructions also mention chamfering the edges, but can't see how to chamfer outside
of copper brake pipe as is so thin.
