My 2005 xs has started to produce a double knocking noise on slow right hand bends, it's sounds as if something is loose almost like a can is swaying with the turn and tapping the body work, I know this sounds a bit weird but I can't find anything loose.
It's also intermittent which makes look like a right loon when I try to explain to my local specialist. It is booked in on 18th to have it looked at but I'm a flapper and wondered if anyone else have/had a similar issue?. Well my local specialist replaced the radius arm bushes as one end of them is located and attached just under your feet whilst sitting and that's where it appeared to be felt when driving but unfortunately the knocking noise continues.
He said it's not the CV joints are fine and that everything else seemed as tight as a drum so some more ideas would be nice, the ride is a little tighter now so not a total loss but still really annoying. Well it's still doing now more on the straights as well as round corners guess the drop links need to be changed now just to rule them out, difficult job? It's more important to concentrate on what's ahead of you than what you have left behind.

Does it do it more when the engine is under load ?
Have had similar issues myself in the past that turned out to be the exhaust tapping against the chassis when the engine twists due to torque or while going around corners. The sound travels along the chassis so it's impossible to tell where it's actually coming from. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/ |

Oh ok thanks I'll definately try and have a look at that I know it did before I decated it and still after so may have a look for any rub/scratch marks in the pipe itself as I don't know any other way to check this unless you have any suggestion?, dies this mean an engine mount may be worn? It's more important to concentrate on what's ahead of you than what you have left behind.

It's unlikely to be an engine mount, more likely one of the exhaust rubbers or it needs adjusting. Try moving the exhaust from side to side and see if it can contact anything. http://www.yorkshireoffroadclub.net/

Sorry for late reply, I am now friends with the new owner (as I never got round to sorting it) apparently it was the 'A' frame that was making the noise, bit of a PITA to do but do-able if you want not sure how it's actually fixed a bush kit maybe?.
Anyway sorry I can't help anymore, I miss the defender loads but don't miss crawling around underneath it every weekend.
