Hey guys,
Thinking about possibly changing my wheels and tyres for standard steel wheels but not sure what tyre availability is like. What do people recommend? I currently run 265/75/16 General Grabber AT2's and they have been fantastic but they are far to wide to fit on standard steels which are 5,5" wide. I don't want to loose too much rolling diameter as what I have now works really well. Sounds silly to change when I'm happy with what I have got but fancy having her back on standard for a while. For the same rolling diameter it's basically just 7.50s.
Some people put 235s on them but it's not recommended by the tyre manufactures. Possible but not advisable. You can also use 205s but they're quite a bit shorter. Tyre selection in 7.50 is fairly limited and I think if you want an all terrain pattern then you're pretty much looking at the Michelin Latitude Cross. In my experience they work very well and I'm happy with them, we've also been happy with the previous generation on the farm pickup. In more aggressive patterns you have a little more choice, but it's still not great. The biggest issue with 7.50s is the new cost - you can often buy second hand ones but new ones are a lot more expensive than an equivalent 235. If you want the option of running the more commonly available and therefore much cheaper 235/85R16 and still want the "traditional" look then you've got the option of Wolf steel wheels. |

Humm food for thought then..
I used to have a set but they were swapped for my modulars. They had Avon Rangemasters which were probably original and still had about 5mm of tread left. Not that it helped, they were truly awful on the road, especially in the wet. From the looks of things you can still buy them and they are exactly the same! 
Ideally I'd like some 1 ton type rims as would have been an option in 1991 but the cost is prohibitive

Shameless plug but if you fancy some classic 110 alloys (correct for 1991, before Boosts) & tyres just about to take mine off my 110

I have a set of 4 (or 5, I can't remember) 7.50x16 Michelin Latitudes with a good amount of tread left and no damage, currently fitted to standard rims, which I need to get rid of (tyres only, not the rims, that is).
If they are of any interest I could dig 'em out and take some photos on Sat. I'd like something for them but they would not be expensive, provided it covered the cost of getting them off the rims I'd be happy enough. |

Mine came with 7.50 Michelin Latitudes and I found them a really decent road tyre, also reasonable on all non-tarmac surfaces except sticky mud.
Would definitely get my vote for what you are after. |

Thanks for the offer Tiger but they don't fit Defenders pre 1994 as the drive flanges were different so could only be fitted to Discovery and I believe RR Classic. The only way around it is to drive around with the centre cap off and have your drive flange sticking out the middle a bit or to use spacers.
Will have a think on it, I don't think I will be in a position to get them until after the paint has been done (I have a horrible feeling there are lots of hidden charges coming my way  )

Without wishing to hijack, my predicament seems relevant SD so hope you don't mind and is hopefully relevant to your question.
For my Puma I am personally I am set on 235 85 16 on white Wolfs due to looks and turning circle but I have a serious dilemma! Conti CC AT's which look boring but would suit my purpose perfectly and are OE or Goodyear Wrangler MTR's which look great imho and are also OE but totally OTT for my road use I have a choice of either built up at roughly the same price 
or Buy wheels alone and put something different on, but that will be more expensive
