United Kingdom 2014 Defender 110 Puma 2.2 CSW Corris Grey
I think if it was going to be based on a D3 or D4 chassis and running gear they would have launched it already. It so obvious that surely someone would have suggested. Having said that I think it's a viable rugged option which would go down well. 2.2 Tdci 110 XS CSW Corris Grey

They won't call it the discovery 4 platform even if it is. I doubt they would want to do it until the new disco had moved to the lighter and 'better' alloy construction.

I can't see the numbers ever adding up for an all new platform.

Good point about retiring the D4 before building something else on the T5 platform. Thumbs Up 2.2 Tdci 110 XS CSW Corris Grey

Yeah, disco 4 already has a superb on and off road reputation.

I would buy one i think, styling though, has to have that utilitarian look about it.

Cheers

Would D4 platform permit a SWB version?

I wouldn't have thought so. Fuel tank is in the middle of the chassis

D3/4 has a bigger tank than that of the RRS, which has a shorter wheelbase (and subsequently fuel tank)
I doubt it could be shortened much further

From a business case LR will want as few platforms as possible. If they can make the Defender work on one of the newer platforms economically then they will.

I would expect it to be based on a variant of the D5 platform myself, however with D3/D4 levels of refinement and luxury.

For McGovern to describe the past Discovery lines as utilitarian gives an idea of where they view drawing the line on basic.

All this would be great from my perspective. A Defender with D3/D4 refinement? yes please. It then comes down to price and styling. I'm sure it will be fantastic engineering wise, it's style wise I worry about.

Thanks for the reply.
It's been a common theory/rumour for some time that the new Defender would be based on the outgoing D4 - but I had been wondering about the implications for SWB.

Going back to the original theme of this thread, suspension components were out being tested last Summer (July 2016) whilst being set up on a RRS mule...

Testing in plain sight...

I tend to agree, a dumbed down D3 without all the electrickery and a Defender ish body would suit me as I thought the D3 I had was the best all round car I have ever owned.

If I could have a brand new D3 with all the issues ironed out I'd be very pleased.

But in 5 years/40K miles I had:

New turbo
6 new glowplugs (body/head off job)
new clutch/flywheel due to off road contamination in a sludgey puddle - no bellhousing bung.
3 alternators/batteries
2 traction control modules (water damage due to position/lack of protection)
Parking brake module
2 new air compressors

If I could avoid these issues I'd be very happy with a new D3!

I'd sooner have a brand-new Disco 2.

Agreed
You just have to drive around Gaydon and you will see mule (or whatever they are called) vehicles that dont quite look right. That last odd one I noticed was what looked like a FFRR but the 'track' of the wheels were inside the wheel arches by quite away. So they were testing a long ish vehicle with a narrower track than a FFRR. 130's have feeling's as well you know Smile

As far as I knew, there are a good few test mules out and about in Europe testing various set-ups and components.

Most likely as above, running completely wrong bodywork to disguise what it's doing.
