Will you shun the new defender?
Logic prevails.

The new defender will not be hand made. It will be manufacture via the 220 + robots that make your too expensive to off-road Range Rover.

Will you shun this new rounded body panel defender or embrace?

Personally I'm not sure yet... I have a RR that my wife drives. I loath it for all its on board modernization and expense which came straight from the factory.

My 1999 defender (the latest available in Canada) is packed full of things like 2015 heated puma seats, blue tooth stereo and phone, surround sound stereo (thank you CDN038) etc all of which I painstakingly installed myself. I love it for all the modernizations that I have have built and understand.

Any thoughts? (Sunday night philosophy with a bottle of Felton Road Pinot) 1999 Defender 110

2007 RR SC

"And that's why it needs to be celebrated, because when the Defender goes we'll have lost this pointer to where we came from, and we're really going to miss it."

Remember how many folk loathed the slab sided D3 until functionally it grew on them? If the new one does a job well then why shun it? It will be better built, have more toys, be more comfortable and capable offroad so what is not to like? Whistle

There are few things that make the defender for me:

- rivets
- roof gutter
- flat glass
- exterior hinges
- 'tall' aspect
- blocky form
- lack of bling
- series style handle retained on the rear

It'd be pretty hard to convince me of a new 'Defender' without most of those. Solved the bowel problem, working on the consonants...

I will buy one of the first ones. Will be a SWB with lights behind the grille. Want to spec it with the canvas hood too. As an early one it will have the sliding windows and galv tub cappings. No air con and no radio please. Will get it Dinatrol'd and it will be a keeper Whistle

Sorry, just had a 1983 throwback moment.... 1951 80" S1 2.0

I'll shun it if it can't do what my current one can.
If it is more capable, more comfortable and lower maintenance then I won't shun it.

I won't buy it because it says "Defender" or "Land Rover", I'll buy it if it's better. I won't shun it because it's "new", but I will if it's worse for being so.

1983 or 1953?

I will spec mine with a full length hood, interior and external mirrors, a recirculating heater/demister unit, rubber pedal pads and a spare wheel carrier on the bonnet.

I hold a candle for the new Defender and will buy one if it is better. I fear it will be fashion over function though.

It won't be a Defender in the truest sense, but if it's a good 4x4 and an alternative for a D4 in its utility capabilities, I'll seriously consider it.

Saying that, it'll probably be the price tag that'll put me off Big Cry Not an owner... yet!

Has the delivery date slipped further back to 2019 now though? So We are unlikely to even see the test subject on the road in order to give a more informed decision...
That said, I will buy one, but its unlikely to be one of the first batch as new cars always have major bugs Shocked

I will shun it if it is not what I want.

If it is what I want, then I won't shun it.

Do I expect it to be what I want? No, I think it is extremely unlikely that it will be anything like I want, but I still hold out a small hope that I will be pleasantly surprised.

Personally, I don't see how anyone can accurately, & truthfully, answer this question, until they know what the "New" Defender will be.

I agree with Pickles

Jury's Out...But If

Too Expensive
Too Complicated
Look don't Touch design ethos
Tougher version of a current Land Rover product range
Not 'Platform' for Multi Use
Mass Appeal not Individualistic
(I accept that LR will make if a genuine Off Road Vehicle)

then probably yes

But if...

Simple (enough)
Practical
Adaptable
All Terrain
All Weather
Increased Comfort
Increased Safety

and here's the big one...manages to pull off the trick of carrying forward the 'Defender' overall design aesthetic
that presents the replacement Defender as the natural 'evolution' of the marque...were it would have been if subjected to overall continual improvement (beyond the 'modest' mechanical upgrades it did received)...

then I'm interested...(If its still a Defender...Not just in name)

The one that wont work for me and will be in 'conflict' with the aims of LR is...
I don't want to drive a wide (let alone mass) appeal vehicle.

It would be very easy to get this wrong...
