Looks like I may have found the answer to my own question on line via this tyre size calculator page :-

I note that a lot of the on-line suppliers of wheel/tyre packages offer 265x60's rather than 265x65" with 18" Bowler wheels . . . according to this calculator even the 65's give a very slightly smaller rolling diameter than standard 16" 235 tyres, so, 60's profile on 18" tyres would give an even smaller rolling diameter I guess ?

Any thoughts much appreciated ?

I had the opportunity to lift an 18 inch bowler alloy with tyre at FlatDog, and was shocked at how light they are...
Also, the speedo vs tyre size is interesting because Landrover put the continental 85's on my truck when purchased, and my sat nav speedo says 89mph but the LR speedo says 94mph... I didn't see a smiths logo either!

Evening all,

interesting and useful thread.

So, I'm on the verge of going Bowler 18. Two questions to those with better maths/ experience than me…

Will going up from a 235x85 16" to a 265x65 18" mean a higher ride height for the car? My shonky maths puts it as raising the height of the vehicle by about 10-15mm. But I am quite prepared to be corrected as I got an 'E' in Maths.

Have those that have 18 Bowler'd their Defenders and put these pics up here also lowered them? Or is it generally accepted to fit as they come and leave them?

Thanks in advance of any help - much appreciated.

Realise this is not really a Bowler question, so forgive the thread hijack, I'll post a separate question.

Not a hugely discernible difference in (visible) ride height IMO. Much like I can barely see the difference when a Def is lowered. This is mine, 18" with BFGs as recommended and fitted by Bolwer, stock LR suspension set up. Thumbs Up

Like Gren I had the wheels & tyres fitted at Bowler, my 110 is still on standard height suspension and there's almost no discernible difference to the height Thumbs Up Thumbs Up

Depends on if you're collecting or having them delivered. I was passing Bowler and they gave me a better deal for pick-up than any other third party supplier. Had a nice coffee and wander round the workshop before spending a lot more on all the other bits (they're great at up-selling and I'm gullible for Bowler kit Whistle ). But whether they'll offer the same discount as third parties for delivery to Italy, who knows? As such, third parties may be better?

Or, get them sent over on a pallet. These guys have done loads of French deliveries for me, quick quotes, excellent customer service and always the cheapest. You'll need height, width, length and weight of the items, plus description and value. They're a logistics broker so look across all firms for the best quote. Pick up from Bowler (to get the best discount) and they'd be with you in a week. And remember, the tyres weigh a huge amount so perhaps order just the wheels and have the tyres bought/fitted in Italy?

Yup, it's the Lightweight Road Bumper. Lovely bit of kit. It's aluminium and either 70% lighter and 30% stronger or 30% lighter and 70% stronger, can't remember which. But when you pick it up and hold it compared to the OE taken off, quite a difference. I've also got the steering guard. All-in, an hour for a DIY fit and I love the look. The lighter weight makes the handling and feel from the front end far sharper and more nimble. Okay, I'm bullsh***ing now Rolling with laughter

Always liked the look of Bowler kit, liked it more when I saw it in the flesh and even more now it's fitted to my DC. Thumbs Up Monsieur Le Grenadier

Looks awesome! I'd only worry people wouldn't cause as much damage to their cars when they're clever enough to reverse into in car parks! Laughing

My bill for bowler parts is getting expensive - just picked up anthracite 18"s on BFGs which will be fitted Monday - fancy either the bowler front bumper per yours or a tubular one instead, but they're a Censored to find - only one I'm keen on so far is the Masai - http://www.masai4x4.com/#!/Masai-Tubular-L...ory=821986 Defender 90 Puma 2.4

I do like their Bumper, and particularly the oversized steering guard with orange detailing that goes with it. But given I've been honest about my DCs future road-biased use I feel the Bowler kit, despite the rally heritage, just looks cleaner. Ive got the grille and light surrounds, plus sills as well. All future mods (insulation, Focal speakers, suzzies, performance etc) will follow that road biased, day-to-day theme. I'd get a 110SW again for the more overland look.

BTW, don't be fooled by the lack of damage the Bowler Bumper can cause. Just last week an oaf in a Citroen Picasso used the French reverse sensors (Bumper impact says stop reversing) and crunched a big hole in their cheapo plastic corner. I was in the car and watched it happen, extraordinary really. When he got out I just shook my head in as condescending a "idiot, you've just reversed into a Defender in your sh** plastic car" way. But not a scratch on the Bumper. No doubt the French fellow won't make any attempt to repair his damage judging by the rest of his car. Whistle Monsieur Le Grenadier
