On the trip to and from Brittany we did 1600 miles in fairly hot weather. Cupboard is spot on - with the front windows open the heat is drawn up from the transmission tunnel making it hot to touch. Close the windows and it cools quickly. With no aircon or vents the most effective set up was to have the rear loadspace (sliding) windows open halfway. Aircon is the future....

I had similar symptoms, it turned out the heater cable sheath in the engine bay had rubbed away and the adjusting mechanism wasn't working in the cold position. I've rigged it up temporarily with a sheath made of electrical tape so that the cable moves properly. New part on the shopping list!
