Wiring question
Hi everyone,

First of all apologies if this has been covered to the nth degree, but a good search on the forum didn't really bring anything up specific.

I bought a single din stereo today in preparation for my audio install, and decided to have my first rummage around my new defender. It's a 12 plate 90 in farmer spec and as such has never had a stereo or speakers fitted to it. So I removed the speaker grille on the drivers side first and found two wires unused just behind it, one black and red, one black and pink, so I presumed, great this is the drivers side sorted. I then proceeded to take the passenger side off only to find a lack of any sort of looms at all. After this I thought I'll have a look behind the dash to see what was stashed behind there, I found a little bundle with the aerial, and iso connectors in there. I could see there were two corresponding wires on one of the iso connectors which matched the drivers side wires. So my question is, does anyone have any idea where the passenger side might be hiding, or is this something I would have to wire in myself? And also if I wanted to also wire in some tweeters, how would I go about this? The head unit is a pioneer and has 3 RCA's?

Once again apologies for the probably very simple questions, but I'm a trimmer by trade so have no trouble pulling stuff apart, but when it comes to car electrics I get sweaty palms! Embarassed

Cheers,
Lew

Hi there again,

Quick question if I can, I had a root around in the dash to locate my speaker wires and am now left a little confused, the only loose wire I can find has two wires running to it coloured black/white and black/brown. These match up with the other two wires in the back of the iso block. However unlike the drivers side which is split into two separate connectors this is a single black connector. Also you can see from the pics that the drivers side contains two connectors and 4 wires whilst the passenger is just one connector of two wires?

Anyone any ideas on this?

Lew

Looks to me like it's wired for a very basic Mono radio (is there such a thing ??)

The ISO block is only wired for one speaker and a supply, the connectors on the second picture are certainly the same type as for a speaker, odd that they have two wires in each one though, that's suggesting there's provision for a second speaker somewhere.

The connector shown on the last picture is not for a speaker or anything else to do with a radio, I don't know what else though.

Haha thanks, I just found them, I can testify that they are indeed taped in the most awkward spot land rover could find I'm sure. One very sore hand later I managed to free them up, interesting that the black connector seems to be provision for a tweeter, makes life a bit easier when I come to put them in!

Thanks for your help,
Lew

Yes the 3 pin connector is for the dash-top tweeters. There will be one the other side too.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top
