Next generation Land Rover Defender.... give it a name?
OK, so there's lots of talk about "the next Defender".
Seems unlikely that JLR would actually call it a Defender or even Defender #2.
DC100 doesn't seem very "catchy", does it?

Historically, they always come out with something whether its Range Rover, Discovery, Evoque, etc... so why don't the members on here suggest a name for it?

If the name sticks, maybe JLR would use it!

Post your suggestion....................... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

What makes you say this?

Up to now, everything JLR has being doing is centred around their stated strategy of 3 - Luxury, Leisure & Utility (now Dual Purpose). For each has it's own brand - Range Rover, Discovery and Defender. Each brand then has it's own family of vehicles or variants.

Whatever comes, I think it will say Defender on the bonnet, even if like the Evoque, it says something different on the tailgate.

I think Supacat is right

If Land Rover come up with a new name it will underline the fact they have given up on the DEFENDER ethos.

As a class of vehicle, with genuine attributes others in the range don't offer, are Land Rover really going to give
up on the 'brand capitol' of the DEFENDER name, I can't see it.

Re-design it, improve it, build it better, retain it's adaptability, make it fit for the future, and call it DEFENDER.

If the replacement is 'look don't touch', if it's too expensive to be 'every-man', if it's 'too niche', even too much 'fashion over function' don't put a DEFENDER badge on it, just leave DEFENDER to represent 1990 - 2016 SKIP

Not sure it matters in the end game. We may become all nostalgic at the name 'Defender', but most persons out there on the street have not a clue about the name, I often say in conversation to none Land Rover owners that I drive a 'Defender' and I can tell by their expression they have not a clue what I am talking about. Ask the man in the street what the vehicle is called and he will probably say a 'Jeep', or just a 'Land Rover', I have lost count how many persons have called my 'Defender' that.

So whenever replacement JLR replaces the 'Defender' with it will not matter to the car buying public what it is called, as most especially new buyers to the mark who will not be buying a name, but will buy on performance, price and its ability. JLR will spend a fortune promoting it and in the end it will be the car thats the star not the name.

And it does not take a genius to realise that if the new vehicle is going to be so radically different than the old, then to call it the same would only confuse, that is why Land Rover dropped the series tag with the advent of the new vehicle in 1984 and instead called it a '90', '110' and then Defender. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

I doubt that JLR marketing will agree - it spends most of it's money on advertising a brand, or series of brands that, in their own words:

"is synonymous with adventure; embodying a go anywhere spirit and a can do attitude, empowering people to achieve their goals and ambitions."

Today it seems it is all about creating a lifestyle around the product that people aspire to.

Again, their words not mine:

"Together, our brands and products must deliver experiences that customers love, for life. In doing so, Jaguar Land Rover will become one of the worlds most valuable lifestyle companies."

I wonder how many Evoques were purchased on performance, price or ability; or indeed how successful it would have been if it did not have the Range Rover badge on the front.

Irrespective of any continuation of the name 'Defender' being retained. It was not so long ago that we all thought the new model would be named the Landy Whistle due to JLR taking legal ownership of the word and threatening legal action against any individuals who had a company or business with the word Landy in is title, such as Landy Glass and who did not change it or omit the word Landy. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

I take and agree with your point, on the other hand it is arguable on the world market stage which mark shares the most popularity and recognition Defender or Range Rover. Of course we will never know but would the Evoque have been as popular sales wise if badged with the former. For those who like Welsh Mountains and narrow boats have a look at my videos and photos at..

in a Windows style we had Series I, II, III, skipped IV to have Defender and it's predecessors. Next one will be either Series V or Land Rover XP Thumbs Up

Call it Trovanter, Land Rover Trovanter !

Trovant

Trovant is a fast growing rock, sandstone with calcareous cement, it grows 2 inch in 1200 years. It is a big rock like the ones this future Defender will have to conquer !
