Bit of a leak
Had a bit of a leak of diesel in the back of the jimny. It has soaked into the plywood and is giving me a headache. How do I get rid of the smell, not so bothered about the stain but if it were removed in the process all the better? I had thought about using the hot air gun to flash it off but I don't want to scorch the ply if I can avoid it. I also wondered if I could get some sort of solvent to remove the diesel but I am already being given a headache and don't want to replace one with another. Any ideas? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

If it's in the back of a Jimny I'd heartily recommend a firelighter Rolling with laughter

So so sorry - but couldn't resist!!

I've always found a soak with gunk (not too much) then a soak (more so) with fairy liquid laced water does the trick on this type of thing.

I'm not sure that you can or will ever get rid of the smell. Diesel won't evaporate, so it won't "dry out" like petrol would. The only way to shift it would be to wash it out with detergent, which will be difficult as it will have soaked in.

Dousing the ply with Teepol and then pressure washing might help, but you may find that you either have to grow to like it ir have to reply the vehicle. If you do the latter, seal the new ply after fitting to prevent spills soaking in in future.

The option, to me, seems obvious; replace the ply ...?

I think I will pass on the firelighters if you don't mind.

New ply I will leave as last resort as it is a quite involved job.

I will busy with the detergent and a heavy brush and see how it goes. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

I got to agree,
The longer the diesel soaked wood is in the car the fumes are going to impregnate the upholstery too!

I would be looking at replacing the wood. Neutral My confidence has been writing cheques that my abilities can't cash for years.
