2.4 TDCi Exhaust Drone 1750 - 2000 rpm
Hi guys,

For those who didn't see my posts a while ago I have a very annoying sounds between 1750 and 2000 rpm. Back then I always described the issue as a vibration and, having gone through all suggestions here ref heat shields, loose brackets etc. etc. came to a loose end.

Having done more investigation I've managed to convince myself what I'm dealing with is actually exhaust drone.

Now I'm going down this path I thought it best to ask you lot if anyone has had issues with drone in the past? I'm the second owner of the vehcile too so interested in whether de-cating can produce a drone just in case the previous owner had the internals removed.

This issue really gets me down when driving the vehicle, something I've never had on my previous landys, so any thoughts are greatly appreciated Smile Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon

Yes decatting can produce a distinctive drone in high gears at about 2krpm which disappears again at a higher rpm. This drone is only under load and at a certain bandwidth of engine load and rpm.

Personally I quite like it and it is probably more distinctive on mine with no rearbox and a straight through centrebox. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Thanks K9F, something to look at then. On your 90 it probably sounds OK, but with the extra length of the 110 exhaust it probably sounds a lot worse if that is the case.

To be specific, the noise/drone appears exactly between 1750 - 1990 rpm, regardless of engine load. It also appears under engine braking, which is what has finally led me to believe it's the exhaust after reading lots of modified car forums. It does get worse under increased engine load, so it is possible to control it slightly by feathering the throttle.

It's most annoying when going up hills long hills or motorway ascents as eventually you feel like your head is vibrating and you get a headache! Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon

I have a 2.2 USW.

I also have almost exactly the same drone! Although mine is 1600-1800. Its on my list to look inti as thats almost exactly where i choose to drive most of the time. Its driving me mad!!

so you arent alone.

From what i can make out its specific to a 110 tdci, USW/SW both have it which i guess is logical (never been in a HT that may be different), my brothers 130 DCHCPU does NOT have it so this suggests its a resonance created from the rear 110 exhaust section not the front, although thats not hard and fast rule as changing the front section could still affect the resonance pattern and solve the boomy droning noise.....

Im not sure. Im reluctant to decat or change the exhaust much. I was wondering whether the EGR being switched off would improve it as when mine is doing a REGEN it near on goes away (changes the resonance frequency for the system), and to do a regen a TDCI closes the EGR. So am considering that one.

Thanks Matt110, glad I'm not the only one - let's hope we can come up with something.

Good call on the EGR, I wonder what RPM's the EGR is most open at - could well be a pattern there!

My brother would im sure correct me here but EGR most likely to be open at low throttle settings and lower revs as it reingests its exhaust to burn off poorly burnt particulates...... high throttle and higher rpm they tend to burn cleaner i think. But they chuff open and closed at all sorts of times depending on a variety of inputs.

OK, no difference with the EGR disconnected. This is of course assuming my EGR is operating correctly. Only way to tell that is to strip it, but it looks a bit of a pain compared to the TD5.

I guess the only way to tell if the previous owner played with the CAT is to strip that too and it looks quite tight to remove also.

Hi Ozzie,

The cat is indeed very tight to remove. Your symptoms with regards to throttle feathering and being able to control the sound is exactly like a decat and the same as mine. Easiest way forward for you may perhaps be to remove the centre exhaust section and then run something like a thick length of cable up the exhaust towards the cat and see if it impinges on the internal cell structure. If it passes through you'll know it's been knocked out perhaps? Easiest solution I can come up with unless of course you have access to an endoscope?

Hi Ozzie my 110 usw 2.4 with a remap and the egr shut sounds like a Lancaster bomber at the same revs as yours . The rest of the car is std and owned from new. It sounds the same with the remap removed. Crying or Very sad

Thanks mega, I think it's got to be the exhaust because despite everything I've yet to sit in a 90 that sounds the same.

If it is there are a few options, weld on resonator pipes, shorten the exhaust (our transit with the same engine has an exhaust that finishes just past the drivers door underneath) or improve soundproofing (although that may not help due to the low frequency).

I didn't get chance to remove the exhaust rear section whilst the weather was nice Sad

Due to a change in circumstances I'm now using the defender a lot more and its got to the point where the noise is getting to me a bit now.

I'm sure my TD5 was louder, but this noise is at a bad frequency! Now: 2010 2.4 TDCi 110 Utility Wagon

Guys are you sure what you are hearing isn't induction noise? I get exactly the same symptoms but it is definitely on the intake side and I removed my dealer fit snorkel. It didn't get rid but moved it away from right beside my ear!

Definitely not induction noise. It's exhaust boom, its absolutely characteristic of it what I'm hearing, and I've never been in a tdci 110 that doesn't do it at bang on those revs. Sample size of 4 myself and others with the same issue.

Ive still not fitted that soundproofing so can't comment but my guess is it will only improve it slightly. Ive just learned not to sit in gears that mean it cruises at that RPM.

There's no way LR would accept a claim, its a vehicle characteristic, not a design flaw, and would need exhaust tuning (length, expansion etc) to genuinely resolve.

Would be interesting to know if anyone has aftermarket exhaust fitted and resolved the issue.

110's, tdci (any), approx 1750 rpm. Exhaust boom.
